Have anyone given a bass as a gift?

Just a thought that came to my mind when I went to my guitarist's place the other day. He had this collection of guitars and theres this particular candy red fender strat that caught my eye so I asked him how much it costed him. He said his parents got it for his birthday, and I was like 'wow, cool'

I personally, couldnt imagine my mum or dad getting me a bass for my birthday. Im just grateful they dont nag at me 24/7 everytime I bring a new guitar home. So far the basses Ive owned ive bought them with my hard-earned cash....

On second thought, it might not be such a good idea for anyone to buy me an instrument though, Im more of a player than a collector, and if an instrument doesnt sound good to me no matter how 'branded' or 'rare' it is, it wouldnt sit in my house for too long. And if someone every got me an expensive bass as a gift but it doesnt sound good I would be thorn.

My parents bought me my first bass-a MIM P Bass. I'm forever grateful that they stuck by me making music!

Santy Clause brought me a Japanese Copy of a Jack Cassidy Signature bass back in 1973. Best present ever!

My old flute-playing friend from music college (30 years ago!) got me to help her choose a bass as a present for her musical-but-not-a-musician husband. Within her budget, and considering his reaction to handling my basses, I picked out an Ibanez ATK with a transparent blue finish on a flamey top. It sounds and looks great, and he was delighted with the gift.

Many years ago, a very good friend of mine wanted a fretless bass. He already owned a a Ric, an Ibanez and a Squier P so I "borrowed" his Squier for a couple of weeks and took it to the guy that worked on all of my gear.

I gave my friend his own bass for his birthday but it was a lined fretless.

Bunch of friends and I pitched together and bought a mutual friend his first bass as a graduation gift.

My wife has bought me 2 killer fretless 5s in the 10 years that we've been married. One will never get sold, the other one she has stated time and again that I'm free to sell if I want, but haven't wanted to yet.

Wonder what she'll get me next?

I'm giving one of my 1988 Ibanez RD-707's to my 15 year old son this Christmas, he learned on my basses and I would feel uncomfortable giving him anything less. My poor vintage bass.....lol :#)

I have an awesome story about this. I was a pretty poor kid and the parents of the lead singer of my band in high school sat me down and informed me that they wanted to get me a "real" bass. I was playing a short scale solid body epiphone that sucked (not saying anything about epiphone but this one sucked).
The only thing they asked me for was the promise that I would have to do something similiar when I grew up.
They got me my first PBass (Mexico/Japanese?) black with white pickguard and rosewood. I wish I still had that bass...
I traded it straight up for a Carvin LB75 then a year or two later I saw a video of me with that P and thought "thats what a bass should sound like". I've had many basses since but have never been without a Pbass since (14 years or so).

For my first birthday after I started playing bass (grade eight), my father gave me his 1969 Hagstrom 8 string bass for a gift. It was the second bass he ever bought (the furst was a Saturn Hofner replica that played like a pig), and it was the first good quality bass he ever bought.

After working friggin' long hours in a lumber mill for an entire summer, he saved his pennies to buy one in Montréal for 200$, and bought it new. It's a gift I'll hold dear, and one I'll never part with.

When i was 17 and i've been successful at the high school, my parents gave me a cheap italian bass (Meazzi Kadett), and last Christmas (me 50) my wife gave me an Hofner Ignition.

Technically, all my instruments are "gifts" from my dad. All my guitars and all my basses were bought for me by my dad, for either Christmas, birthdays, or spur of the moments (yeah I'm spoiled and I know it ) I would agree though, getting an instrument unseen from someone could backfire pretty hard. Luckily, my dad would always take me to the shops to try em out and pick them out myself. Because they are all presents from my parents, I don't think I'll be able to part with any of them.

I have. Four times

• An SX sunburst jazz to my kids' school
• An SX 5 string Yamaha clone to a church I play at
• Gave my son a Franken P-Bass that I couldn't sell for what I had into it
• This Christmas my son is getting a Squire VM Fretless

The poll question asks if anyone has been given a bass as a gift. I have not.

My 2 main basses (Ibanez GSR200 and Squier Deluxe Jazz V) were bought as christmas presents off my parents. Never given a bass as a gift though, might do that though, when i can afford it.

Many times. In fact, I've got 4 or 5 SX's I'm likely going to gift to a music program shortly just to get them the heck out've my house.
