Have anyone given a bass as a gift?

I've both given, and been given.

I was "given" one (well a couple in the end) by my parents, meaning, I was playing in a band, and had been for like 8 months on "The Band" bass, which was an ok Jazz clone. For winning Battle of the Bands in my county (state for all you Americans) I got bought a BEAUTY of a Quest-MD and a Roland DB-500 amp.


I got one given to me properly by the college I was at, I helped out a lot, gave free lessons to lower school kids, etc. so they gave me an old 5 string with a broken nut.

Fixed it up for a small price, gigged it for a bit, decided I loved 5-ers, bought a Modulus, and gave that bass to a girl I was/am teaching because she couldn't afford anything to practice on. I hope she just does the same one day...

I gave an active Samick Artist Series 5'er to a good friend that was learning to play. I was the only owner and had it for years.

Then a few years later, I gave another good friend a Tradition MTB500. He had been my guitarist for quite a while and was into learning bass.

I have not yet had the opportunity to give a bass as a present to someone.

But I have been given 2 basses as a present:

an Aria-Pro II when I was 16 by my mother
and a Sandberg California JM by my girlfriend

My first bass was a gift from my Mother, a $79 Kent P-Bass copy. I wish I still had it. I used it as trade-in two years later toward my 1966 Guild Starfire, which I still have.

When my sons wanted a bass I bought them each a $79 Rogue. Although my mother spent a lot more $ when you consider the cost of inflation over all these years, hers was a better investment. I still play bass and my sons don't

I've never given one but my parents gave me my first and only bass (for the moment), a Tanglewood Rebel 4k, last year as a christmas present.

My dad gave me a Hofner beatle bass for my birthday...best present he ever got me. And probably the best "physical" gift I've ever gotten. Wife got me a MIJ Squier Strat for Xmas when I was considering returning to playing (I did, but went back to playing bass. Guitars make fun toys, though...)

I bought my older son a beginner P-bass, & my younger son a beginner Strat when they were old enough. Later I chipped in for the older boy's Tobias, and the younger boy's Gibson SG, which they still have. Older son got away from playing when he left for college, younger son (they're both mid-20's now) still jams...

Yes I have..both Basses and six strings..
Here's my young nephew last Christmas wtih his newly finished Lake Placid Blue Strat.
I also threw in some extras..can't play the blues without a pair of Blues Brothers sunglasses.

The Hondo on the right was a Christmas present my senior year in high school...Still have that one...

The white Series 10 Eclipse on the left, I gave to my wife's nephew for Christmas a few years back...He had expressed interest in learning the bass after seeing my band play, and I didn't play the Series 10 anymore...So we got him a small practice amp and I gave him the bass...He was still a teenager at the time, and the expression on his face was priceless...

My parents got me a Vox Wyman Bass for my 17th birthday. I would never part with that bass. My wife also bought me a Gibson Les Paul Signature Bass as a birthday gift. I've been very fortunate.

I gave a neighborhood kid a Lefty Squire Bass for a birthday present.

I gave my old G&L fretless to a guy that stepped up when I really needed it to help run a fencing club, it saved the club since I had to go do an out of state job thing for about 6 months. I had no cash so it was the only way I could say thanks. He still uses it to my knowledge.

I used to work in a music store. One year, as a Christmas bonus, my boss gave me a bass from the sales floor that I had been eyeing and a new set of active pickups to fit into it. Unfortunately, the neck had a nasty twist & hump at the first fret so I didn't use it very much. I was able to make it usable, but I didn't want to sink any money into it as I was saving up for the Stingray that I currently play.

My kids are currently too young to start playing, but I have every intention to give them a bass (+ amp combo) and a drum kit for Christmas/birthday (twins with a b-day about two weeks after Christmas) when they get a bit bigger. I normally don't like combining b-days and Christmas because I think that the two events should be kept separate and special-- but in this case, the gifts would exceed the usual budget limits for each individual occasion.
