I have a funny story about this. About 15 years ago, I was shopping at the local mall. (Raleigh, NC). I was paying for my stuff and the cashier leaned in to me and asks, "Is your name Mike?". I confirmed that it was. She then asked, "Do you play bass?" to which I also replied 'yes'. She asked me if I'd just played a show last night, to which I also said 'yes'. Then she asked for an autograph, and produced a small book in which I wrote my illegible scrawl. Then she said, "I just love your bass work Mr. Gordon. Phish is my favorite band." I just winked and walked out. Later I did confirm that he and I do look a little bit alike. Too phunny!
And remember, if you ever meet a proctologist at a party, stick by him. He has the best stories.

Not musician related.. but I was standing in line at a busy KFC just north of Baton Rouge and the clerk says to me, "You're from New York, aren't you". I hadn't even said a word to her,

I've been asked a couple of times in non-musical situations if I was a musician. I wish it had been because of my hair or the way I dress, but that wasn't it. It's happened when they found out I work in a tech (computer software) field. I guess some folks, in addition to myself, have noticed that it's not uncommon for engineering/tech type people to be musicians.
Someone once had the gall to think I was James Taylor!

He actually can play some, he worked with some local musicians (Maine) while doing research for Revival (main character is a rock guitarist)
Yes to all. Doing something totally random (I think I was at target) and a band fan asked me to sign the shirt she was wearing at the time. That was pretty cool.

More often than not, my talent has been vastly overestimated, like the time I was invited to audition as lead singer for a prog metal band, because "I looked like a singer". I can't sing. When I try to sing, I sound like one of those "what they really sound like" videos.
