Have you ever been recognized as a musician?....

At parties, if there's music playing and I'm not otherwise engaged in conversation, I'll tend to low-hum the bass part to whatever song I'm hearing. On a couple of occasions someone has overheard me doing this and asked if I was a musician. One woman even said "you must be a bass player."
I had a client meeting in Austin a few years ago, first meeting with the client. Day one, everyone wore suits and ties. At the end of the day he said, "I'm wearing jeans and a t-shirt tomorrow, everyone else is welcome to do the same. He and I were the only ones that wore jeans and t-shirts the next day. He looks at me with my pony tail and full sleeves and says, "You just have to be a musician." Turns out his son was a guitar player playing full time. Talk about a great "in."
But as someone else said, tall, thin, long hair, jeans, t-shirts, tattoos - it's not a huge stretch to assume I'm a musician.

In the mid 70s, my future wife & I walked into a big box hardware store and young lady came up to me and said "OMG, are you Mike W. that played in the E** T****? I said I was. I had not played for 7 or 8 years. Got a big rush, turned and helped my GF pick her jaw up off the floor. My GF had never seen me play.
Sure happened several times.

All the time. If you play around the same area for 35 years, a lot of people get to know you are a musician.
When my Wife and I first started dating, we were approached at dinner one night at Olive Garden by a guy wearing a t-shirt for a local cover band I had done regular fill-in work with for many years. After he went back to his table, she looked at me and said, "Is this a regular thing?" I told her it wasn't so much "regular," but something that does happen on occasion, and that she'll eventually get used to it. She did. She plays violin and piano, so she kind of understands. My first wife, however, never did get used to it, and it always bothered her.

Some days I'm barely even recognisable as a human being... ;-)
I went to the doctors once for a bad back and saw a locum who recognised me as "the lead singer from Mister Park" after catching us at a gig. I also used to get recognised a lot when I played in a touring goth band but that was mostly down to it being a very, very small scene.

Never been asked if I was a musician, but I can't tell you how many times I've been asked if I was a Biker.
I was working in a small show as an actor in a cast of 6. One of the other actors and I went to lunch after a matinee and saw a group that had been at the show (they were obvious from the matching hats and vests.) He asked them if they had enjoyed the show and one of them said, "Oh yes, it was wonderful! Were you there?"
I've been asked if I was a biker, security/bouncer, cop, and if I was ex-military. Never been mistaken for a musician. LOL!
Most recently a Diner and Costco buying gas ha ha ha The Diner is a local area Diner and I was asked if I was in the PHOENIXBAND husband and wife seen us playing in the area. Costco buying gas the attendant said he knows me and asked if I am in a band that plays in Bogeys? I said yeah and he said him and his wife love the band they try to make it out whenever we play there. He told me his name is Tom, I told him we are there on the 21st come up and say hello to the band.
I think that anyone that works with people such as a lawyer or teacher is more attuned to reading other people as a whole. True musicians are often talented, articulate, and very good at multitasking and anticipating things. There is a certain confidence that cannot be faked or hidden. I was told by a college professor many years ago that I was one of the most talented people he had ever met. We are both artists and musicians, but neither of us knew it at that time.
