Have you found "your sound" yet?

I had my sound with an SVT-CL. Then, I found even more of my sound in an Aguilar DB750. After sitting nearly unused for over a year, I sold the SVT-CL without regret.

Same here I'm about to unload my SVT.

I find my sound every day. Unfortunately, it's never the same sound, and sometimes I don't like it! Oh, well. Best news is, I know that my sound is in my Fender Highway One Precision, Sadowsky flats, silk scarf mute, Genz Benz STM-900, and SWR Goliath III 410. The only variables are in the knobs on the amp (I removed the ones on the bass).


I do love the SVT CL and SVT 810e, though. Absolutely the quintessential bass sound!

2) DOD pedal tuner
3) Dunlop volume pedal
4) Genz Benz 6.0 with 2 12T cabs
5) interchange #1 with a G&L L2500 fretless with Labella tape wounds and coil tapping or a Michael Kelly Club Custom 5 with LaBella tapes.
I now have 5 bass rigs for sale!LOL

I did, or pretty damn close, with my Windsor and a couple of 4x12s. When biamped through a pre/power amp setup I can crank the bass and pick up that key part I am missing from just the head. Heaven. I love it.

Will I stop buying amps or modding my head? Nahhhhh....

I've come close by using a splitter into two amplifiers.

I love my P bass through my flat eq Boss multi with compressor, into my Carvin head with mid shift on and a smiley face eq, out of 4x10 cabs.
Can't say it's my sound, but it's a good sound.

I found my sound the first time I played in the shop.

Something to do with not trimming my nails on my right hand, it adds an aggressive "picky" tone to my finger-style, that I love.

After many years of struggling with dual band compressors, watching a Billy Sheehan DVD finally unlocked my sound. 2 pickups, 2 outputs, 2 signals, 2 compressors. Throw in a little overdrive on the top channel and it's magic.

There is a youtube interview and mini-lesson by John Paul Jones (worth watching) in which he says something like:

"If John Bonham were to flip some buckets upside down and start playing on them as if they were drums the sound could be immediately recognized as John Bonham."

Having shared that cool tidbit, I can relate to the quest for the cool new tones. Its part of the fun.

I've never had trouble finding it, regardless of which bass, head and cab I'm playing.

1) Pick up bass
2) Turn on amp
3) Tweak controls until you hear something you like
4) That's your sound for today

All the rest is just unnecessary agonizing over things you don't have. You don't need to have ONE sound, you can have a different sound every day - whatever pleases you with the gear you're using. Whatever you play, you will sound like you.

Besides, much of the sound is (ALL together now) in the fingers.

I just got an Svt-Cl this afternoon from my new best friend, the UPS driver. I've been running an svt 3-pro for the last 10+ years and thought it was time to kick it up a notch. This is the sound that I've been searching for: SVT-Cl + SVT 610hlf. Anyone out there have that same experience - finding the sound that's been in your head?-hopefully... ((Totally off topic, however nobody else but a musician would have appreciate finding THAT SOUND... sorry; just the mindless ramblings of an idiot...))

I think the secret of "our bass sound " are in the speakers and eq.

I have a pretty good sound with my GK/Laney, but my cheap bass puts me down a notch. Doesn't help that I'm having to switch from flats to rounds at the mo either. It was all I could afford when I broke a string. But hopefully it won't be too many years til I have the money to put into a Warwick and a shiny new set of flats for some real punch to the gut tone.

I am not gifted enough to dial in different sounds for different songs, but every time I turn the knobs and get a different sounds inspire me to play different grooves, if that makes any sense...
BTW the time I got the most compliments for my sound, I was thinking how horrible my sound was.

I have about a dozen basses ranging from hollowbody to chambered to solid body, and from 30" to 32" to 34" scale. I sound like me no matter which one I play.

I've played through a blackface Bassman into a 60's Fender 2x15, a Hartke solid state amp into a Peavey 15, through a Sunn Coliseum-300 into the same Peavey, I have used a Fender Bassman 120 combo with a 15" speaker, and I now play through a Genz-Benz Shuttle 6.0 into a Shuttle T12 cab and occasionally I add a G-B Shuttle 2x10 cab.

No matter which bass, amp and cab I play, I can find a sound I like at that time. That's "my sound."

IMO it would be boring to have "A" sound. It's just fine to have a slightly different sound with every bass, every amp and every venue. It always sounds like me...therefore, it's "my sound."
