I play in a cover band as well, still make it mine. Most of the time its better than "their's".
I'm slowly sneaking up on "my" sound. After gas-ing for a boatload of stuff, I've recently realized that the sound I think of when saying "bass tone" is a passive P-type bass through a tube amp. I have the bass, I have a SSBDI, so I'm close enough.

While I'll agree that I will always sound like me regardless of the rig or bass, it wasn't until I got my Berg NV215 / 71 SVT together that it really hit me that I had found what I was looking for. I've had plenty of gear in the past and played through many house rigs, but that just ended my amp/spkr search.

When I picked up a bass during a break at a rehearsal in my twenties. At the time, I was the guitarists, and I was taking lessons from a guitar teacher, struggling because I liked to play with my fingers and avoid the "chords". After a few notes on the bass, I found it. I went to my next lesson to break the news to my teacher. He told me that I was going to be "bored to death". 15 years later, I'm still "bored to death".
what I discovered after 12 years of playing/studying music is that my tone isn't important at all ... what is important is what I play... why ? because I can always EQ my bass differently to have a working tone.
