Having trouble cancelling Scott's Bass Lessons

I've seen some of his Youtube videos, and my impression was that Scott likes to hear himself talk, and wants to be perceived as "cool." But, the content was lacking; a triumph of style over substance is unlikely to get me to open my wallet for more of the same.

The way it’s currently setup, you cannot cancel without sending an email to customer support requesting cancellation. And hoping that someone responds.

Once you give them a payment method, they hang onto it. There’s no way to erase your payment info from the site. You can only update the info by adding a new - valid - credit card.

You would literally have to cancel your credit card if you aren’t getting a response from your emails.

I have lots of subscription services and none of them are this aggressive about preventing cancellations. Makes the whole service look really bad and shady.

I get the impression SBL's is rather too much flannel and not enough solid study stuff. Chk out that German guy Tom Bormann? Hes a great studied tasteful player with loads of groovy patterns all accurately written up....from easy to hard.

There is plenty of knowledge on SBL's website. I don't have much time to look at it but I am on my second year with them. I took the list holiday weekend and spent a good amount of time on there.
It does seem a little awkward and clumsy but I think that may be me. We all learn at different rates and styles
I personally think it's great tool.
Nothing is free.

Same here, signed up for the free trial but decided it's not for me. Now I can't just easily cancel my subscription, you have to message Support and wait for them to cancel it for you. No doubt so they can try to convince you to stay.

This is very dodgy and enough to convince me I don't want to be associated with them.

Charging you and then hanging onto that money for 30 days gives opportunity to make some interest off that money. Not insignificant if you hook enough people, and he's got 70000 members. I can't bag on him though, I like his videos, he's just witty and engaging enough to not turn me off, and his stuff is well-edited. Although they are set up like lessons, there's a lot more going on. In some ways, it might be better to call it "Scott's Bass Content".

Tom Bornemanns work on YT is good stuff. Lessons, sight reading and bass transcriptions.
While you are there also check out Samboat's bass transcriptions.

Glad I looked at this thread as I was looking at signing up for the trial as being bombarded with “saving money” messages that tell me the deal is running out tonight. Always wary about giving card details at the best of times and dislike the hassle at any juncture to get money returned if necessary.

Will carry on trying to “play” this difficult (for me) instrument based upon all the information I have downloaded/saved/watched.

I use Privacy.com for sites that I'm unsure about. Privacy lets you create temporary credit card numbers that you can set up limits either recurring or one use. The cards can be closed at any time.

I downloaded the free SBL Toolkit and after a few days started getting daily emails urging me to sign up. I didn't read any of them, just deleted them. I'm not sure they will ever stop, though I haven't gotten one today yet.

It's not just SBL, I bought a Janek Gwizdala book that had links to online video content that requires registration (no credit card needed) and started getting regular emails from him as well.

My story:
After a year I had intended to cancel it (because I wasn't using it, not their fault) but I was careless and let it auto-renew. They didn't have to reverse that, but I sent an email saying that I had not intended to renew, and asking if they would please refund that and end my membership,

and they did.

After *another* year I have rejoined, just partly in gratitude for that.

I had zero trouble cancelling. Was surprised it wasn't just a button somewhere and I had to email them, but they responded promptly. No issues, an overall positive experience.

I had zero issues canceling. Most subscriptions work this way today, you need to call in to cancel or something. But I emailed them and it was done in just a few hours.

As far as the content goes it seems good to me. I don’t pay attention to the emails very much but I do like SBL and think it’s worth the coin for one who’s learning.

i had no problem cancelling, but the lessons weren't for me. it seemed like any technique i was interested in had a long lead-in for beginners or a teacher - not necessarily scott - who just yakked and yakked. ultimately the lessons weren't for me, but there's a lot of info there.
