He’s Back!

Other than the neck and body he makes, what makes these worth that much???? It seems like he shapes the neck and body, and then adds a bunch of Hipshot hardware. All that for over $3,000??? I don't think so.

Plus, he nickel and dimes you for extras that should be included in a $3200 bass. Sorry, but that's a rip-off. If I'm spending that much on a bass, I'll spend a little more on a used Fodera or Carl Thompson (if I could find one).

No offense intended for Lakin, but come on. Get serious.

I'm indifferent on the the whole D Lakin thing. I love my Lāklands, I love my vintage Fenders, and I will reserve judgement on Lakin's basses until I actually play one.

BTW, how much do folks pay for Alleva Coppolo and/or Wal basses?? Hmmmm...

Dan Strack is working with Dan Lakin to build these basses. These are top notch instruments. He realized the 1st gen D. Lakins were not a good idea, being Korean with USA hardware. Once he gets the first few "Fender-ish" basses and the short scale out, he will be doing other designs as well. One of Dan's best attributes is his customer service. He will build you whatever you want and make sure it's what you want. I've worked with him since his Lakland days and he is a stand-up guy...

I could never see spending $3k on a bass myself, but isn’t that about what a USA Lakland costs? And aren’t Sadowskys more expensive? Somebody is buying these costly basses.

I really like my Korean Lakins a lot. I think they’re a step above my one Skyline. Not that the Skyline is bad by any means. I liked the idea of making essentially a better Skyline for the same price.

As for just being a fender clone, that seems to be what people want. Actually, people want the holy grail vintage, real Fender which will set you back more than $3k easily. What fresh new design bass sells anywhere near the volume of the Leo Fender triumvirate of P, J and Stingray? Bongo maybe?
