Head Size recommendation

Had an earlier post up about a few heads i was considering. I decided to wait and do a little more research and figure out exactly what my goals were.
First id like to build a fearful 15-6 , im comfortable with the woodworking, electronics necessary etc to construct it to spec
My question lies with the head. I had been considering something in the 200watt range before deciding on the fearful but now i think i may need more. I would like to have the versatility to play out , mostly bars etc . What range should i be looking at to take advantage of the fearful while still not spending a metric ton. I was thinking in the area of 300 watts might be enough but could sure use some advice. Ive tried to research it on here some, but just came away more confused.

Thanks again

There is very little difference in volume between a 200 watt amp and a 300 watt amp, (about 1.5 db). You would hardly notice it. The main criteria you mention is getting the most out of your fearful. To me, that means about 800 watts. This would be roughly 6 db louder than a 200 watt. Most people hear 6db as somewhat louder or 50% louder, so you would notice the difference in volume. This would definitely be loud enough to cover most barroom gigs with plenty of clean sound. If you tell me more about what sound you are looking for and what style you play, I could give you a more informed opinion.

I play a lot of 90 ish rock ala goo goo dolls - long way down and newer three days grace etc. I dont particularly care for distortion or sharp bright sounds, more low kind of silky smooth sound. Not sure if that helps describe it but describing a sound isnt too easy :-)

Thanks again

Sounds like you want a bit of head room. I would be looking for something that drops 500+ watts into 8 Ohms. You wont use most of it unless you want to get real loud, but it will keep your sound clean. A [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] bridged would fit your needs I think. You get more than enough power to stay clean, and a ton of EQ. Another option that has recently come on my radar is an ART tube channel into your choice of power amp.

Oh yeah, good point. Make sure the rating you are looking at is for an 8 ohm load. You should find those in the specs. Most amp descriptions are maximum output at minimum load. That is usually 4 ohms. I agree 500 watts is enough. I am planning on using a 1100 watt @ 8 ohm amp. I will never run it at full volume, but better to have too much and turn down that too much and start clipping.

It also depends on what his tonal goals are. For my purposes I use a 400 watt amp into my 1515/66, but I am shooting for that tube drive. If I wanted the same volume with a super clean sound I would be looking at something that could dump 2,000 watts or so into a 4 Ohm cab. I wouldnt be using all that ever, but it would net me the head room.
