Headless Club???

He asked if I wanted finish on them, and I said no I wanted the raw original brass so they’re polished smooth on the sides with some grain to the top and front, they’re really nice.
Installed and fits perfect. I’m going to ask to have the grub screws moved further away from the zero for it to allow more room for the string to bend in and set a good witness point.

Hmmm… I suppose there's not much room for them to move, as there are the recessed holes for the thick ball ends. And these cannot be moved, as the strings have a defined length.

There’s some kind of mojo with this headpiece, after playing with it on this bass for a couple of days I’m getting crazy sustain… like play a chord and it sustains forever and harmonics ring easily all over the neck including 3rd n 4th frets.

I’m pretty sure this is due to the end mounted headpiece along with the downward pressure from strings to the zero fret vs just laying on the zero fret like others. I think that additional downward pressure is amplifying the sustain. I had a brass block with the other headpiece but no downward pressure like this.

Solid Brass on both ends makes a huge difference. Here’s a comparison with the original that doesn’t have the grub screws.

Been looking at the Ace headless short scale bass and I've some really basic questions regarding headless BGs...
1} The Ace says it uses any regular type single ball end strings. As one cuts the end of the string off beyond the upper neck clamp, does that mean any scale (short, medium, long) could be properly utilized here?
2} As flats and tape wound strings often unravel when they're cut, could this restrict the Ace headless system to using only round wounds? Or would the pressure from the upper clamp hold and prevent such strings from unraveling?

Thanks for any help with info here...
~I'm a 'mediocre' player who's been enjoying BGs for years, and in fact I bought one of the original Steinburgers (used, and cheaply) many decades ago. But I'm now too damn old to remember much of anything about it except I found it uncomfortable to play and soon resold it. ~The Ace however looks like a comfortable sitdown player to me....

No, each string MUST be used within their appropriate scale length

Any type of string can work with the Ace headless system. Trim those strings with caution, if you cut it too short THEN it will unravel from the upper clamp.

The Ace basses are very comfortable to play sitting down thanks to it's body design!

I have an Ibanez EHB1006MS arriving tomorrow. It will be my first foray into both headless and multi-scale. I like the fact that it can take regular strings.

It's too bad the prices on original Steinbergers are still so high. I have been tempted to get one many times over the years. I'm considering the Spirit but haven't played one to see how it stacks up against the original.

Congrats on the new bass. I wanted one of the first generation of these with the blue burl top but couldn't afford on at the time.

Not from my POV.
Besides the 5W are rare as rocking horse poo and very expensive. They never made a 6.
The Status Streamline 5 is the next closest to the originals when Status clear their order books again anyway.

They're very sold, sound decent, but without the pivot plate the reach to first position is long. A $10 20min handyman fix is available. Look for "strap pin extender" in this or the Spirit threads.

While I've been very tempted by the short scale Ace Bootlegger headless bass, on second thoughts I think I'll just not get a headless for a while yet. I'm just so used to, and comfortable with, small and fast skinny necked basses with headstocks, I don't wanna complicate my life any further right now with any new learning curves...

You are describing the EHBs to a "T"... just saying... ;)

Was about to comment exactly that!

He needs to try them out.
Perhaps you're right... But describing necks as 'fast and skinny' is a relative term, I've found, often to my regret. I once bought a Danalectro Longhorn because it was described that way, only to discover it was 1.75"at the nut and had neck edges as flat and sharp as a dagger!
Currently I've yet to see (or play) any bass with as quick and easy a playing neck as my Acinonyx Cat bass or my Squier CV Mustang have... And from the specs I've read on the EHBs they appear to me to be fairly wide at the nut and have flatter radius necks than what I'm accustomed to and like..

the new Gen2 Bootlegger headless basses have a block end at the head of the neck so they feel just like a bass with a headstock..
The short scale has a pretty darn skinny neck. It feels tiny.
The nut width on mine is a hair under 1.5”
My description of the neck in my own words…

It definitely tapers down to a very narrow nut width.
I’m including a diagram to illustrate my explanation of the back profile.

Up by the nut, in the first couple of frets, it feels like a medium V
As you go down towards the middle of the neck, it kind of turns into what I suppose to be a C shape and seems to flatten out a bit more past the 12th fret into almost a U or D shape.

It kind of changes depending on the position you’re playing in.
I’m not an expert on neck shapes, but I suppose a C shape is an ok general description?
