Audio Technica offer great durability for the price. I've had the same pair for 6 years now and they still work great. Most headphones die on me by then.

Interesting.. I've had a pair of ATH-D40 for about the same timeframe, and in that time they have basically disintegrated. The covering on the headband and cups has completely gone, bits of stuff that shouldn't be poking out is poking out, and the wiring has needed fixing multiple times. I do wear them a lot but I don't treat them particularly roughly.
They do still work, which does indicate the speakers themselves are reliable, and the cable going between the headphones and the jack is still in perfect condition which is really surprising, but I am still a little disappointed how quickly they have fallen apart.
