Headroom

Yes, but it sounds like you will not have the sound pressure level you want. You must have a LOUD band. :D The idea is to have an amp that run your cabs to where they sound good without farting and the amp never never clips.

OTOH, that amp may in fact push the full 2,000 watts into whatever cab you have plugged in, regardless of the cab's rating, if you send in a sharp enough voltage spike from the bass and preamp. I know you probably knew that already, but I just wanted to clarify.

Yeah....I meant on purpose.

Kind of like saying "just because the knob goes to 10 does not mean you have to put it on 10" (and even that is not applicable in an amp situation, since we know full power can easily be achieved long before you run out of knob to turn).

Don't you hate it, you have to just about fork lift your gear in and the guitar player waltzes in with his Fender Twin Reverb under one arm and blows your doors off. :rollno:

But, that's life... :)

Returning to the other issue, i just posted that question about the Yamaha power amp (runned together with an Ampeg SVP-PRO) because i also have a Fender HD800PRO (800W at 4Ohms/1200W at 2Ohms) and i feel like i have much more sound pressure with the Fender than with the Yamaha/Ampeg stuff.

Maybe i'm just not working right with the Yamaha/Ampeg stuff...
 
Worrying about running your cabs to their capacity is the wrong thing to worry about. It's not important. It's probably better for your cabs if you DON'T run them close to their limits.

The important thing is whether you can get the volume and tone you need for your application. There's absolutely no need for you to get an amp twice or three times the rating of your cab if you can easily do your gig with less. There IS a need to get an amp that big if you need it to get the volume and tone you want with room to spare. But that's not determined by the power handling rating of the cab.

BTW, headroom has absolutely nothing to do with whether your amp is rated higher than your cab or not. It has to do with whether you have more than enough amp for your playing situation. Put it this way: if you need 400 W to do your gig easily, and you get a 1500 W amp, you have the same amount of headroom whether you run it into a 500 W cab or into a 1500 W cab of equal efficiency and frequency response.
 
Does your amp have a huge amount of power that you dont use? Do you think amps that are very powerful just sound better?

I'm considering upgrading from the B800 to the B1500. I know I will never need all the vol that the b1500 produces, but maybe all that power sounds better?
I've been playing bass for 35 yrs starting with a Silvertone 6x10 with a 35 watt tube amp. Now I play a Accugroove with a 1200 watt'er. But I don't think a 400 watt amp working at 200 watts sounds much different than a 1200 watt amp operating at 200 watts.
