Maybe I missed reading this in the thread, but weren't all Gibson basses made in the 60's and 70's had miminal weight of 40lbs? Why does Gibson hate bassist??

Had a Warwick N/T Thumb 6 that clocked 14 lbs. Also an early Alembic (around 1974-5) with a small body and long neck (they only made a few cuz of the horrible neck dive.) don't know the weight but it killed my back as a young guy.
I had an Gibson RD Artist with built in moog compressor. It was just north of 15.
I have an 80s US BC Rich ST that I'm told is a maple body. That thing weighs I ton.
Recently I purchased a Spector Euro LX5 that is also very dense.
Both are easily in the 10lbs to 12lbs range, and not because of the hardware; although I'm sure the brass bridge on the Spector doesn't help.

It was a great sounding bass and I had it when I was young. I was in high school during the time I owned it and my back was in much better shape than it is today. Still it was heavy to me back then, and I ended up trading it for an G&L L-1000 HOG with maple fb. That was a heavy bass as well but hardly in the same class as the RD.
Yeh, youth, blind, healthy youth. I remember getting rid of that Alembic for a Status Series II and it felt like I was playing fresh air!
All things relative. I would find the HOG a boat anchor today, but back then it seemed light as a feather in comparison to the RD.

Not as heavy as a NT Thumb-bass 6 though - that's the heaviest I've played.
I'm moving to a much lighter NG3 - when it arrives - Yay for me.

I could actually be doing much worse: my Ibanez BTB7 comes in at roughly 12½ lbs. Its neck is a sliver compared to the 50s Classic P neck, or otherwise it'd be closer to 120lbs and diving like a submarine. Still, that weight + 35" scale = I play sitting down. & would love to get my hands on the harness that Esperanza Spalding uses with her fretless 6.

I had a pair of American Jazz basses that i played 4 sets a night with in Vegas, as well as toting it on airplanes and across parking lots and hotels. After a while, the back and shoulder pain sent me to a chiropractor, the Xray showed a distinct curve of the spine to the left, as well as an unusual muscle buildup on the same side. I had to do traction and stims to even start correcting it...all because of that big ol' slab of Fender goodness. I could get any tone i wanted out of those things so i guess it was worth it at the time.
