Heavy Basses?

My maple J is a good 11 pounds easily, but it's so much thinner sounding than my 8.5 pound P. I think it's part pickups and part the fact that my J has a 'vintage' bridge and my P has a hi-mass.

It's because it's a P vs a J.

I'm a firm believer that weight cuts down on vibration being transferred to the body which allows the pickups to do their job better.

Just like adding bar end weights to a motorcycle handlebar to keep it from vibrating, a heavy body and neck should yield a fuller sound.

The heaviest bass I played was a Warwick Thumb Bolt-On 4. Ovangkol Body, Ovangkol Neck, Wenge Fingerboard, and felt about 11 pounds.

For me the only bass heavier than a Peavey T-40 was a killer looking early 80s B.C. Rich Eagle bass...all brass and koa wood with a maple center - had to be 15lbs...what a boat anchor!

Recently I saw a Fender Musicmaster bass in a local shop. Short-scale, Mustang body, tiny-looking. But it weighed a TON. Not sure why, but it was super dense.
