... so absolute I really don't know how to play bass, no bass gear at all and have just "pressed some strings" on a friend's bass. 
I like music a lot -- open to any genre -- lately I've been listening to a lot of indie, blues, post rock, funk, pop, chill, electronic/dance, jazz -- told
Can play simple drum rhythms and that's about it. I wanted to learn an instrument that has more melody (and groove). Group of friends here have a lot of guitarists, drummers but only one bassist. Figured I can start learning bass even if I'm almost in my 40s.
Very interested in grooving, melody, and also audio/signal processing in general.
Am trying to find out a good way to start learning the bass and also a good starting bass guitar and I think the talkbass community is a good place to start.
Currently, based on some readings, I think a good bass to start for me is the ibanez sr 500 (I've got relatively short and stubby fingers and the slim neck and closer strings should help ). I haven't looked at the amps yet. If there are others that I should look into, please let me know.
