hello from bopland

Hello guys,

I've just joined. Nice place you have here. I played bass for several months some time ago, and now I'm in a position to come back to this wonderful instrument.

I'm also a founder of BopLand.org - free jazz vocabulary with dozens of Link Removed and Link Removed.

Best,
bopland

are there instructions somewhere on how to search the data base? i read the "how do i search", but i still dont quite get it. i heard somewhere that there was a way to search for licks by the artists name?

The BopLand.org database fully supports search by chord progressions like

4/4 | Fm | Bm | E7 | Ab

Time signature and bar delimeters are optional, though they help to put most relevant results first. In BopLand.org notation "#" stands for sharp, and "b" stands for flat. So if one wants to fetch licks for F shart minor chord he would type something like "F#m" into the search input.

Known chord types are:

maj, 6 - for major chords
m, m7, m6, m+7 - for minor chords
7, 9, 11, 13, 7b9, 7+9, etc - for dominant 7th chords
m7-5 - for half-diminished chords
0 - for diminished chords

To search for II V I in Cdur one could type

Dm7 G7 Cmaj

There are also some aliases to save some typing, e.g. the previous search query could be simplified down to

2 5 1 Cmaj

or even

2 5 1 c

To search for II V I in Cmoll use the following query:

2 5 1 Cmin

Known aliases are:

5 1
2 5 1
1 6 2 5
3 6 2 5

There's also support for searching by tune like

All the things you are Eb

which will give you licks for "All the Things you are" in Eb Major. But the number of tunes supported is very limited so, basically one would search by typing exact chord progression.

BopLand.org database does not store information about artists, so search by artist is not supported. But technically there is an option to do it for your own collection of jazz licks on your own web page. Check these links:
