Hello, I need help in purchasing my first bass

Will Squier Affinity Jazz Bass be good for playing rock music? In rock I mean like "The Who" "Grateful Dead" "The Doors" and such.. (That's only three of the bands I'm listening to, but those are my favourite genres in general).

Yes.

I own lots of basses. Wouldn't even have considered a Squier until a couple of years ago when I sat in a guitar center and ABed some of them with Fenders and other basses. I think they currently have the most bang for the buck. I owned a few SXs and they don't come close IMO in quality or sound. Just bought and returned an Ibanez SR300 also. Don't know about the Ibanez you were looking at, but most Ibanezes feel toylike to me. While I never took it into a band situation, I got the feeling it wasn't going to do a great deal of cutting through in the mix either.

I'd go for a Squier, for sure. Or that corvette that was on sale yesterday. Actually, that would have been my first choice hands down, but I think ya missed it. :)

Hehe I think I wouldn't have bought it anyway...I live in Israel. After I saw Guitar Center website I thought to myself "wish I was in the USA hehe". But ok I think I'll go with that Squier, looks promising. And the price is good too.

I haven't found a shop here that sells SX or Essex, but thanks anyway. I've already tried the Ibanez GSR 200 and the Yamaha RBX170. I think I'll eventually go with the Ibanez..seems like the best choice.

Hey Verjolas, I'm from Israel too :) Kley Zemer are the ones that sell SX here, they don't list it on their website tho, go to their shop in Tel-Aviv Dizingof(sp?).
In addition, I would look for a used bass, there are some on yad2.
With both options you should go and try the bass in person and make sure its what you want.

Amit.

Hehe hey Amit, I went today to Kley Zemer in Dizingof and saw that SX. Looks cheap..well, it is cheap. I think I'll go with the Ibanez GSR 200. With my budget I think it's the best bass I can get. The Squier sounds good but it's fits jazz style more than rock.

I just want to point out that Jazz Bass doesn't mean its for Jazz music ..........

Most of the rock bass player uses a Jazz or a Precision. Or even P/J bass.

- Geddy Lee (Rush)is one good example, he plays a Jazz bass
- Duff (GnR / VR) plays a P/J Bass
- Timmy C (RATM) plays a Jazz bass
- Flea plays a Jazz bass as well

So if you buying your first bass, i would start off with Squier Jazz or Precision.

But most of the bass could play rock in my opinion.

Hey I bought a guitar today! I went for a Stagg B300:

I know it may seem kind of a strange choice compare to what I thought of buying, but I went to a shop today, played on that guitar and just loved it! It sounded absolutely great. It felt really good in my hands, well built guitar. And another thing, I bought it off display so it cost me 238$. I also got a guitar which I loved and I also have like 100$ to spare.
