HELP; Bass compressor choice

Hello to all out there..
I own a usa jazz bass with an ampeg b100r and a e-harmonix big muff.
Im interested to buy a comp around 200euros..
Can you suggest me maybe some top comps at tha range of price?
I play punk rock and i need vintage sound..

Some kind of audio-example (Yuotube-link for example) would be helpful here, since your "vintage" might differ quite essentially from my "vintage"...

It will also help if you search on the word "compressor" to see some of the literally thousands of threads on the subject. Also check the links in my sig for some reviews.

Regarding punk rock, that genre is known for a rough, ragged sound, not a controlled, smooth sound. So compression may not get you where you want to go. Even though many punk rock records probably had some compression on the bass, it was certainly not a key part of the tone.

Also, the Big Muff compresses your signal a LOT already. Adding a compressor to it is suicide for your dynamics, for the aggression and liveliness of your sound. You will sound more like a keyboard synth than a punk rock bass.

Finbase is right though: if you can post some audio/video examples of the sound you want, I am sure we can help you get that sound--even if it does not involve a compressor.



Side note: I bet almost anything the audio/video examples will feature a P bass played with a pick, through an SVT and an 810 cab.
