Help choosing a bass cab, but not Eden!

Not the answer for someone looking for lows, based on TB hive mind knowledge (no actual experience here).

my cabs have lows the induce bowel movements! i have 2 cabs, they are rediculouse! sound fantastic! they are the new cabs i might add.

Hmm, it's a long shot. But very affordable.

Are you using the speakon connection to power the amp?

If so, try plugging the 1/4" jacks with ear plugs to see if that stops the farting that you're hearing.

Eden used to provide two plastic 1/4" plugs, with their new cabs, for that purpose.

Because the cabs are built so tight. And are so efficient, that they will produce enough air pressure to create a farting sound out of those open jacks.

This is a REAL possibility. More often than not it results in a whistling or buzzing sort of a sound, but plug those 1/4" with some foam earplugs if you have some handy to see if that eliminates it.

Another good option is to check out David Nordschow's latest offerings at "dnaamps.com/cabinets/". I have his DNS410 cabinet which goes significantly lower than other 12" or 15" speakers; is very efficient; and has HUGE power handling capability. Gives new meaning to clarity and articulation on B string notes on a 5-string. Typical street price is $1049 but I got mine for $999 with free shipping. Looks like street price on the D212XST is ~$899 so not a huge difference in price. Big difference in sound though.

On any of the speaker cabs you are considering, try to take your amp and bass to the place selling the speaker cabs so you can really hear how your set up would sound with them and then let your ears be your guide.

What ever you do, stay away from Acoustic cabs. I blew up a 4x10 cab at a outdoor gig using a Peavey head.

And I did the carnage playing a '51 P-bass reissue.

You've already got a great amp in that GK why don't you get a pair of the GK Neo 212s, that would cover all your bases IMO

after reading the 1st page only i'd suggest getting over your bias against 10s and 12s. OR go with your bias and get a 115 you like. or just use the mesa cab everywhere.

ps- a gk 212 neo might suit you. it definitely suits that head.

You've already got a great amp in that GK why don't you get a pair of the GK Neo 212s, that would cover all your bases IMO

That is what i use now. GK 500 Fusion into a GK Neo 2x12 cab. With one cab I get 350 watts, with two I can get 500 watts. With a GK 800 Fusion you'd get either 560 watts into one cab or 800 watts into two cabs. Oh yes, the GK 800 can get stupid loud if that's a consideration. The NEW cab is rated at 600 watts and weighs 50 lbs. Easy schlept. Sounds very good. No farting. Priced right! Go get 'cha one . . . or two.

I am in love with my GK Neo 115. Handles a lot all by itself, stacked even better. And super light you can almost carry with one hand.

I love Ev15l's but for the sensitivity and glorious bright mid tones, not so much the weight or X-Max at only 3.3 mm though.

Yeah but the weight isn't so bad with a 1x15 compared to so many other cabs with 2 drivers...too many 2x10 & 4x10 cabs with the high power drivers and long voice coils don't have that lightning quick response like the EV15L...some are too dark sounding imo.

Then you take some of these players who will only play with their fingers away from the bridge....its TOO much of an upright tone to my ears....not that anything is wrong with that....depends on the situation.

As has been stated here before driver size has little or no impact on low frequency response. It has a far greater effect on off axis response, with larger drivers being "beamier". The point in the second quote above is that there is a whole new generation of cabinets that use high quality sound reinforcement drivers rather than the typical MI drivers. Typically In these designs, a high excursion woofer is paired with a Mid and often a compression driver and waveguide for the HF. These cabs usually have a very well defined low frequency response and greatly improved off axis response due to the additional drivers and the woofers crossed over much lower than the typical bass cab.
I would suggest to anyone looking for a new cab to forget about what is inside a cab, but rather focus on what comes out of it. There are many excellent choices out there.

Many of the very best HI-FI cabs have 5" to 6 1/2" woofers....some have 4" woofers.

You don't have to convince me about EV15l sounding absolutely great and I don't personally care about how much things weigh as I work in studio almost all the time now.
It's just all the wingeing geriatrics round here talk about nothing else.

Im scared to death to run distortion thru my EV15L cabs or push them very hard.

I have a modded Acoustic 8x10 (extensive bracing added inside by myself) and several other bass cabs including my 1997 Eden Metro 2x10 which is incredible for a 2x10 setup....don't want to blow those either as they don't make those early Eden drivers anymore!

I probably should dump them all and go with a modern Greenboy design.

Just want to throw in a quick Eden defense here. While I haven't tried the d212, I gig with a pair of the EX112s powered by GK BM500, and I have no problems keeping up with the band volume-and the EX are Eden's budget line. I actually chose them over a pair of Aggie GS112s. Just sayin'.

Also +1 to the idea that speaker size does not determine low frequency response. Just look at a frequency response graph for a 8" speaker and compare it to a comparable 15" speakers graph. They will look almost identical. The only difference is that the 15" speaker is louder-which is why as the speakers get smaller, they add more of them.

Ev15l's are fricking fabulous with distortion all you need is a 100 to 200watt all tube amp to drive them with.
All the very sensitive old school 15" drivers (EV SRO/15l/15b, JBL130/140 and Altec 418/421) deserve to be driven with nice all tube amps, not a good idea to destroy what's left of the good stuff with modern mega watt solid state amps.:-(

That's how I usually describe my cab(BareFaced BigTwin2), to someone who's never heard one. High-fi like a studio monitor designed for bass. These new "super cabs" are terrific at allowing your bass and the color of your pre amp/amp to really shine through..

My only tube amps are a 71 Marshall 50, Carlsbro 60TC and a Sound City 120....no SS amps bigger than 450 watts into 4 ohms.

I'm mainly concerned with using distortion and fuzz pedals.

Btw, I have a pair of Altec 15" alnico home speakers from the 60's....they have the built in 5" mid/tweet....should I try them for bass?

They sound like crap in the Altec home cabinets for HI-FI....thought about reconing them to bass or guitar speakers...very expensive for factory kits though.
