Read the Dallas Craigslist Musician's ads. Seems the real ads are hard to find between all the whining about cancellations with no notice or short notice, free gigs, unpaid church gigs, and (just for you Joe 
) Musicians asking restaurants to provide free food for the sake of "good exposure".
Edit--- not much of that on there today, someone must have been a flagging maniac. Here's a for a recent one. Just go to the musician heading and search "food"

i have an aqquantance (flagrant spelling error) who is from some part or another of texas and said the area he is in places that deliver food are a rarity
right and every bar knows that gas used to get to gigs isn't actually subtracted from your tank

WOW! This isn't even a sleazy bar making money off a BOTB - it's some local park board! $30 to enter (aka pay to play), and you get to play to whomever stops by the park to listen. What? You're doing this for free? You should never write any advertisement or promotion for free. You're ruining the market. What about all those people who have thousands of dollars tied up in a college education that get paid to do this type thing? They'll be homeless if you continue to do this.

I read an ad on here where the musician was whining that playing free gigs would hurt the market and diminish the expectations of club owners and band bookers that might come to expect that musicians will play for free. He or she said something about feeding his family or making rent (nobody can afford to buy a house with just playing music). I say they need to wake up and get on welfare like my band.
Music is an art and if you expect to get paid for your talent, then go sell out to the record company. Everyone knows they are watching you at every gig and waiting to sign you up when you get good enough. Then once you sign up they steal your soul and give it to the next Britney or whatever.
Leave the real artistic music to those who do it for the love. Free Love.

"I don't need money from a gig, I get money from welfare. That's where musician's money is supposed to come from. My $300 a month gets me 4 full tanks of gas and a few packs of ramen noodles for my kids. Money is overrated! Playing music is enjoyable enough that I love playing for free. That 10 hours of rehearsal for each show and 2 hours of load in/load out time is well worth the few half price beers I get! That and my friend said a big rec exec was down at the local coffee shop last night looking for talent! Then later he was at the neighborhood bar! What do you know? I wish I was playing those places for free."

okay, so i was iffy as to where i should post this, but i'm not trying to start an argument, i just really want to know, ant the argument thread looks to be fairly dead. so, here goes...
at the risk of being hated and flamed, i must know...
1.) if you're a gigging musician, trying to feed yourself/family on gigs alone, why don't you get a day job like a responsible person?
2.)if you have a job, and need the gig money to pay your bills, why not cut some spending/find a better job, just generally figure out how to be more financially stable?
3.) if a band isn't able to bring in a crowd, how much do they deserve? (keep in mind, on a saturday night, most of these places would be pretty busy without a band there.)
look, i'm all for getting paid, but there's the issue of what the band actually deserves. if a bar has 200-250 people there with no band, and 200-250 with a band, how much do you expect the bar to pay you? i know that many of you are in good bands that can draw a crowd, but i some of you may be neglecting to realize that not everyone in the bar/club/whatever came to see YOU, some of them just came.
instead of complaining about free exposure, why can't you just learn to negotiate a better deal, or figure out roughly how many people you're pulling in? why should you demand $500 to play if you're only bringing in $250 of extra business?

We're all musicians, for whatever reason, seeking to connect with other musicians. If you're a church organization looking for a worship leader or musicians to volunteer time and talent and play without pay during services, you're not looking for musicians. If you're a venue or bar looking for a band to play and not get paid, you're not looking for musicians either. You're looking for volunteers.
