HELP! Evaluate this trade - AVRI for Custom Shop

I have a 1982 Fender Fullerton American Vintage Precision bass. It's in my avatar. It's all original with original case and pickup covers.

I may be able to trade it for a Fender Custom Shop 1961 Time Machine Heavy Relic Jazz bass. It's a 2019. Original case and all case candy. Sweetwater sells them new for $4350.

Good move? Bad move? What would you do?

The real question here is: what's your end game ?

If you want to maximize the ROI, that's one story.

If you're in love with the relic'd CS Jazz and simply want to play it...there's an easy answer to that one.

If you simply want a Jazz Bass...that's a whole different ballgame.

Yes, good questions @ajkula66. I think as I'm sitting here thinking about how to answer that I may have figured this out. I like my PBass. It plays great. And has good tone. Why mess with a good thing? Sometimes I think dollar signs go off in my head and I let that control me.

Fullertones are fine instruments IMO/IME. And they have been gaining value over the last few years.

That is one very pretty P-Bass, and this is coming from someone who doesn't play FSOs anymore.

I wouldn’t do it because I dislike relic’d instruments, but that’s me. If I ever got a CS bass, it would look pristine when it arrived.

That's a sweet looking P Bass, and to me (you did as for opinions, right?) it would always seem REAL vs 'something made to look like something else.' Plus, I'm not really a Jazz bass guy.

I’d take a Precision over a Jazz every time. And that Jazz looks awful. Why take a belt sander to a nice bass?

Nope, I wouldn’t do it.

Your ‘82 Fullerton is essentially a first year custom shop bass made in the original factory. They aren’t making any more of those. I mean, that factory doesn’t even exist anymore. They’re harder and harder to find. Corona will be pumping out the CS for many years to come.

I love my ‘83 AVRI P and wouldn’t part with it.

So, if you want a Jazz and already have another great Precision to play, I'd say go for the trade. Value-wise, you'd be ahead for awhile. But, I'd expect that AVRI to eventually be worth as much as that CS Jazz.

Fake relics suck... Custom Shop or not. Your original is the one I'd be hanging on to.

I like some fake relics, but I wouldn't pay to have that done to a brand new top-end bass. No way. The Jazz is a cool bass, but I would rate your precision much higher.

There's a basic fundamental question here - do you want a P or a Jazz? If you decide you want to substitute a Jazz for your P, only then do you need to decide if you want to trade your P for that specific Jazz.
