HELP! Evaluate this trade - AVRI for Custom Shop

I’d do anything possible to NOT own a FCS. That said, your ‘82 is a seasoned classic that will become only more and more irreplaceable. You can order a FCS all day, every day in any model, model year, or relic condition you want. They’ll be making more. They won’t and can’t make any more genuine ‘82 Fullerton Precisions.

If you really want a Jazz, take your time shopping for the one you really want and find a way to get it without trading.

Any matters of aesthetic opinions and preferences pertaining to you are your business. Some may think you should choose a lane between Precision and Jazz for whatever reason but that's your business, too.

He was kind enough to bring the Jazz by for me to try it. Holy poopie. It's incredible! Super vintage sounding, great burp and snarl, gorgeous neck. Probably the best bass I've ever played...Damn. Decision made tougher! lol

I may be able to trade it for a Fender Custom Shop 1961 Time Machine Heavy Relic Jazz bass. It's a 2019. Original case and all case candy. Sweetwater sells them new for $4350.

Bad move. I've played a Fullerton, I've played CS basses, and my #1 Fender is a '06 AVRI '62, and I wouldn't trade it for any Custom Shops. The Fullertons are creme de la creme when it comes to Fenders. If I was you and wanted a Jazz, I'd look into one of the '62 AVRI or the '64 AVI instruments. They may not quite measure up to the Fullerton in every aspect, but I think they stand as just as equal to any CS I've ever picked up.

I would keep the P bass and if you want buy the Jazz. I believe everyone should have a P Bass. There was a time when recording engineers didn't like to record anything but a P bass. I have a 66 P and a custom shop Jazz I wouldn't sell either of them.

Keep the P Bass, as someone else said, the Jazz looks horrible.

I'd keep the P...because I have found that it's the sound I keep coming back to anyway. Plus, the P is truly beautiful and classy... the J is great... but can't hold a candle to the P in the looks department for my tastes.

Semantics, Custom Shop in the context of a standard stocked object that is sold through a big reseller is less custom and therefore might not mean as much to you in the long run unless you love the bass.

Definitely keep the Fullerton. I had a Candy Apple Red one a while ago, foolishly sold it. Only bass I regret selling.

It seems like your potential trade partner is willing to swap basses of unequal value in your favor. Why not simply offer to buy the Jazz for less than it’s worth and keep the Precision? That way you can flip the Jazz later if you want to.

Buy a regular J or an AVRI. But keep the P.

I was lucky enough to buy a 1983 Fullerton AVS '62 P earlier this year. Amazing bass in every way!!! I've had several Fender CS basses, including a current dual single-coil pickup '54 style CS. There is no way I'd trade your Fullerton AVS P for a Fender CS. If you want a Jazz bass, then maybe look into a Fender AVRI jazz. They're very reasonable in cost for how good they are.

He brought the Jazz by this morning. It's amazing. Plays perfectly. Sounds incredible. Amazing neck. Lovely vintage tones.
