HELP! Evaluate this trade - AVRI for Custom Shop

This one is strong willed. But we have ways of making you buy a CS. Mwhahaha

I’ve bought two. One was a Pino. Sent them both back. That said, I’ve heard guys out everywhere that sound amazing with them.

I’ve been playing Sadowsky since 1990 and have high expectations when I pay 4k for a bass. FCS didn’t cut it for me, and hasn’t since 1988. They’ll be absolutely fine without my business and I’ll be fine without them.

I'd maybe consider the trade if it wasn't that specific finish that blue and relic dont look good together to me personally if it was white black or sunburst I might be swayed tho

I think true value wise - the P bass is worth more, the cs is a soulless cnc made instrument that a “master” assembled and set up - the Fullerton is closer to a Leo era instrument in my opinion

Right. That is for sure. But what if the Jazz plays and sounds better? To me at least? There's something to that right?

Nope, I wouldn’t do it.

Your ‘82 Fullerton is essentially a first year custom shop bass made in the original factory. They aren’t making any more of those. I mean, that factory doesn’t even exist anymore. They’re harder and harder to find. Corona will be pumping out the CS for many years to come.

I love my ‘83 AVRI P and wouldn’t part with it.

Especially if you really like what you have...

I have a 1982 Fender Fullerton American Vintage Precision bass. It's in my avatar. It's all original with original case and pickup covers.

I may be able to trade it for a Fender Custom Shop 1961 Time Machine Heavy Relic Jazz bass. It's a 2019. Original case and all case candy. Sweetwater sells them new for $4350.

Your old one is going to keep going up and up and up in value. That Custom Shop will likely never be worth anywhere near as much.

Hold on to the one that is already quite sought after, and has a 40 year jump on the other. You can get an artificially aged Jazz Bass any time.

That '82 Fullerton is a sweet looking bass. If it were mine, it would be a keeper...but that's just me.

keep the P bass cuz you'll regret it. my thought on that is because you didn't decide "i don't want this p bass anymore id rather have that jazz". if youre in love with the jazz and also like the p, start saving for the jazz.

What I ask myself is if i had the bass i might trade AND the money to buy the bass i'm trading for, would I still trade the bass i have?

This is what it really comes down to in the end. J vs. P. Also, I can't stop thinking about how amazing the CS played.

It might play amazingly well, but how will it sound to you in a band? I'm sure it'd sound pretty good, but you might think differently.

Bottom line: If you sell the Precision in favor of the Jazz, only to find the sound of the Jazz is not to your taste in a band setting, then it's too late. It won't matter how amazingly well it plays.

Me, I would keep the ‘82.
If I just had to have a custom shop I would get it too. I finance basses if the right one comes along and I do not have a brown paper bag of beer stained gig cash hidden.

I’d keep the Precision , however if you found the Jazz neck/sound more to your liking I’d wait and track down and try a Fullerton ‘62 Jazz Bass instead before committing any sale/exchange . Fullerton reissues used the original vintage correct body templates which differ from CS generic bodies . Strange to think the Custom Shop charge $$$ to replicate the vintage relic look but don’t even bother with period correct bodies .
I’ve owned a 1983 ‘62 Fullerton Jazz for many years now and wouldn’t exchange it for any CS equivalent.
