help fatten my tone

And Jimmy's certain to recant soon, given his history of hating the "close enough for rock and roll" school of thought. What's the point of running that no-compromises REDDI (or the Ampegs) if the bass tone is only kinda close? ;)
Who says turning off the bridge pickup on a Jazz is compromising? Is it 100% identical to the P sound? No. But it's darn close and sounds darn good regardless. Joe Osborn cut all of his many tracks with a Jazz using only the neck pickup. I always thought it was a Precision till I saw a picture of him. Heard many P v J tests on here where the only difference I heard between them was a tad more high end on the J. So let's not pretend they're two completely different worlds, folks.

And it's not compromising that I have a problem with...what I have a problem with is the attitude that the audience doesn't care or know anything about music. It's not their job to care or know...it's yours. But I certainly respect people's gear budgets and tastes enough to know that not everyone can or wants to spend thousands of dollars on gear. Just don't use the audience as an excuse to be lame. I've seen enough bands booed off the stage to know that collectively, they DO know about music enough to know what sucks.

+1 to looking into pickup height. I'd start by checking that the neck pickup is at spec by measuring and comparing to the Fender recommendations. Not uncommon for the foam to compress over time and drop them too low. Starting at spec then you can adjust to taste.

I had the same problem. Not the same amp but my GK responded nicely to turning down the high knob and (counter-intuitively....at least to me) turning UP the high mids. My D and G now sound "thicker". To finish it off I put on a new set of GHS Precision flats regulars (55-105), which helped even more. I guess that's about as good as I can get w/o new amp/cabs/pups. Pretty happy now, as the improvements are very noticable! Also I dial down the (passive) tone control more than 50%.
