Help Haiti

Sorry but we have things to take care of on our front.
Plus 90% of money donated will not reach the hands of those who need it.

What a lovely rationalization.
There are plenty of organizations with low overhead - Red Cross is a great example.

I have to agree with Absentia about taking care of things on our front. You have to take care of your own before you can help someone else.

Don't get me wrong, they do need help and I'm for helping those in need when I can, but there comes a point where you have to stop and let someone else take over. I feel for these people but like I said, I agree with Absentia, we really do need to focus more on fixing our country instead of someone elses because ours is a mess too, just in other ways.

BTW, Haiti wasn't doing so great prior to this disaster, the earthquake just happened to push them over the edge so I think it's a shame that something like this has to happen before people take notice and want to help.

Not targeting anyone here, but many people (myself included - and I'm really working to get away from doing it) use "I can't afford it" as an excuse. Then I see people who have far less than me giving (time or money) to those less fortunate than themselves.

"taking care of things on our front" - If you're contributing to local charities, helping at the local food bank, or whatever, rather than helping international causes - that's a valid way of helping out, and good for you!
If your funding your GAS habit, well... that's your choice.

I love when people talk out of their ***.

Absentia isn't. Haiti has a proven track record of squandering millions of dollars in donations while over 13,000,000 American children live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level of $20,000 a year for a family of four. Makes perfect sense to me. Not saying this is good thing, but it is true.

I know Haiti has a history of squandering aid; I'm not blind to that. I'm also very aware of the issues on the home front--if some folks want to stick to helping solely with that, I'm not going to criticize them for it. (Now whether a highly cynical person--this is not directed at you--will actually do a lot to help the poverty-stricken in the US is another question.) I wish/hope that they would help with both if they are able to.

Furthemore, that 90% figure is pulled totally out of thin air as far as I can see. And this thread is about individual donations, which will not go to the Haitian government, but (hopefully most of the time) to organizations with low overhead such as the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres that are addressing the dire, immediate medical needs of the Haitian people. So that prediction, IMO, is just an excuse to do nothing.

Instead of blindly crying "SCAM!!" or "Misappropriation of funds!!", why not look into what the organization you choose to support is actually doing w/the donations recieved.

BTW, NONE of the donations sent are going to the Hatian govt. The UN has taken over the scene since last week when this happened.

Everything's going to rescue and relief efforts.

Here's what we're doing:

All the proceeds go to the Canadian Red Cross for the relief effort.
We've got some great bands lined up and tons of media attention.
