With notable exception of some types like AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) lead-acid batteries rarely have service life exceeding 10 years. (This, and energy density, are main reasons why energy storage is a hot technology.) So all you really 'need' is month and last digit of manufacturing date. So you don't have to retool labels very often and you can buy them in large quantity. But I expect the next wave of product improvement (and product liability) will bring us individual serial numbers and personalized date information...Don't know why they don't come up with a better identifying label than that. Guess that would be too easy.
Just had a look at a map - that factory is about 20 mi from my house...I just sent photo and talked to customer support at the battery factory in Pennsylvania.
