In tab form! My bass teacher gave it to me, i don't know what it is (other then scales). Haven't been able to afford lessons, so i can't ask him so... Here goes.

Yes I know ! But I want to understand how people that rely on tabs find their fingerings. Because tabs show you where the notes are but not in a bessistic or musical way.

BTW I'm writing my first book and for the volume one I will include tabs because it is a hands-on on grooves and stuff like that and while writing the exercices I have to edit the tabs to make them like the way it should be played. A lot of editing I should say ;-)

I take you at your word -- you don't understand tabs - all your readers would need is have a fretboard chart handy - look at the tab and then look at a bass fretboard chart. However, if they are using tab I don't think they really care what notes are in play.

Here is the fretboard chart:

Print this off ---- the drill would go --- now what note is on the 3rd fret of the E string? Yep it's a G, the 5th is an A, the 2 on the A string would be a B note and then the 3 on the E string is another G.

So your first bar has these notes G-A-B-G the second bar is A-B-C-A and the third bar is B-C-D-B
Or using tab you don't really need to know what notes just play the fret number that is shown on the specific string. IMO those that use tab don't really care what notes they are playing. You were asking about what fingers to use - I don't use tab - can not help but, I do not think most have a finger pattern established. Something for the book.

In your book think about including bass clef, tab and scale degree (R-3-5-3) As a newbie bass player I want to see scale degrees. I ignore tab all together and if a bass clef is available I put the scale degree under the bass clef notes. That's what I work from - listening for the chord changes I rely upon the chord tones for my riff. I am amazed how quickly an acceptable baseline develops using the scale degree approach. Most how to books do not show scale degrees, something to think about. O'h yes, scale degree fingering, the scale takes place over 4 frets and we have 4 fingers of course you already know that -- .

This took me more time to understand then the first I read music I think. So unlogical to me. May be because it is how it is written with a computer keyboard no ? Or it is always like that ?

What if you have a tab and no recording of the music? How do you play it then?

I get students who learn a song from tabs, fingerings are a mess, since they haven't learned their positions properly. Don't have a cd or ipod with them and look at me like I'm a fool when I say I don't know how the song goes. Sly, you'll sell 40 percent more books with tabs in it. Good luck!
