Help! Looking at amps for my Hofner

You've probably read my thread on the Reeves 225, but if not, take it from a long time Hofner owner, this is the ticket for the best tones I've EVER gotten out of my Hofner.

Warm Rich Full and just wonderful for every bass I've plugged into it.

The master volume also allows you to play at small club volumes while
still keeping your tone.

My father was an authorized Vox tech.
The Super Beatle was hands down most trouble prone amp
Vox ever built.
I used to trip over the piles of them at his shop when I was a kid.


For recording or small venues,
You would be far better off with an Ampeg B15 or B18 with a good driver
or even a Hiwatt/Reeves Custom DR-504 or DR-103


I really tried to like solid state/tube hybrids for the weight issue,
but there's always been something missing.

My vote for hand wired tube goodness

Thanks RickenBoogie. I honestly appreciate when people take time to try and help. I played the Scout again last night and it was different from what I remembered. I'm afraid it has slipped in running. I find it impossible to remember what things sound like. When I go back to a store to try something again I'm always puzzled that things don't sound quite like I remember. Of course this is after trying all kinds of other things so perhaps our tonal memory is more relational then one would think. Did you like the sound on the sound that Guillaume Stelly gets in the clip?

Hey FFTT if you have any sound clips of your Hofner and the Reeves I'd love to hear them. As a matter of fact, if any TBers with a Hofner could post clips playing through their rig it would be super. We could make a game of it! The winner gets 1, Boasting and bragging rights 2, Their rig duplicated by me. (If I can afford it!) Just think, maybe it would end the Tube vs. SS wars forever and there would be world peace. (Well maybe not)

P.S. No cheating!

i have a '68 beatle bass, a V63 rick and alot of different bass amps ( both tube and solid state), but i'm not so sure that a sound clip recorded at home on my zoom H2 would give you a clear idea of what each amp sounds like. IMO, i think that i could make any of them sound very close to the cavern clip's tone.
