Help me decide on a bass!

For $500 you can still get an Epiphone Thunderbird IV Classic Pro, like the one in my avatar. It's passive, has Gibson USA humbuckers, and looks cool. Cheers!

Between the 2 models posited by the OP, the MIM is a decent, middle of the road, workhorse bass. The Danelectro is more of a "novelty" thing - it'll work OK, but I think of it as the "last" bass you buy for your collection - when you have all the other kinds in your herd, and just want something "different", the solution to that dilemna is a Dano. It doesn't come to mind for me as a first or second bass.

That being said - I knew a bassist who played a 2 lipstick tube Dano as his only bass, professionally, gigging nightly, for years. Sounded great, he was very happy with it.

It's the player, not the bass. Nothing wrong with unique, if it does the job.

I don't have a problem with "unique", but...the Danelectro bass in question has the upper horn ending at the 17th fret. Even if it doesn't neck dive (I'd guess it does), the end of the neck is going to be way out there once hung on a strap, requiring much more reach than a more typical bass with an upper horn that extends to the 12th fret. It's likely a tough bass for the OP (or anyone) to play. If I owned one, it'd be used for a tune here or there (hence "novelty"); I wouldn't want something that ergonomically difficult as a main or second bass that I played all the time.

True. You could fix that with the famous strap extender that warwick players use for balance.... but out of the box it will likely be further out for your left arm due to how it hangs.

Definitely the Jazz for slapping and popping, the funky stuff.

have you tried ibanez sr premium line product with nordstrand big single pickup or aguilar super double ? it is versatile and suits that genre,....
