You know -- based on everything I've heard about these new Squiers, that really isn't a bad suggestion -- not bad at all!
I'm also hungering for a 5 stringer for hard rock/metal, top options are:

A good friend of mine has a Dean 5-string that he likes a lot. I don't know much about them and I've never played it. He also has a Godin fret-less 5 so it's not like the Dean is in bad company. I'm mentioning that more than recommending it. I heard a pretty sweet sounding fret-less Pedulla 5 string being played a couple nights ago. I don't know what the price or model was but it had that kind of modern tone to it, as you say. I think that comes from two humbuckers or at least one humbucker with another pickup (not that more is not involved, but I do see some common sound character in basses with dual humbuckers). Active is interesting, but to my ear it is the pick-up configuration that gives the basses a more modern tone. I know it's more than your budget, but I'm wishing someone would check out the new five string Rics that have double humbuckers. Those have to be killer, but I don't think anyone has talked about them yet.
Spectors are worth a try. Should be completely different from a G&L. Also Warwick Corvette Bubinga Active.
Really look into Peavey Cirrus 5 Bubinga wood (awesom rich tone). I have that one and a Cirrus 4 Redwood (brighter sounding for slap and very articulate tone). These basses have two fantastic soapbar pickups made by Peavey...huge tonal range. Each PUP has its own 9V battery. My C5 has bubinga top, body and neck with the most amazing rich tones. I got my C5 on Ebay. There are good deals on them out there because alot of people try 5's and don't play them long enough to get a good feel for them, so they come up for around $800 or $900 and they are worth EVERY penny!
