Help me find anime I enjoy

you want dark then i'll definitely re-mention IRIA. I also enjoyed samurai champloo although that's not so dark
I've disliked anime for most of my life and I remain extremely critical of it, but there are a few that I deem not only the best anime I've ever seen, but probably some of the best shows in general:
FLCL - Absolutely crazy visuals and one of the most ambitious storylines in going against the traditional "chosen one" cliche
Cowboy Bebop - Transcends the medium with self awareness, humor, and relevance. The Alien homage episode remains one of the creepiest, too!
Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad - Very well done, emotional and musically respectful.
I also love YuYu Hakusho because it doesn't have the stupid "flailing arms"/over-the-top emotions/etc. and has a kickass plot. I love the idea of the main character of a series dying in the first episode.

If you liked Death Note. Then I second Code Geass - a few comedy episodes, excellent story.

I was like you too. I had to have serious stuff but with lots of blood (Gantz was my first anime, pretty sweet). Now I like the lighthearted comedy stuff more... haha.

. .Hack//sign, the one that got me started on this and is still my favorite today, has no characters dying in the real world and is notorious for lack of action scenesthen for something different - Mind Game. also from Yuasa but in a kind of lighter mood - Kaiba.
It's 3 AM and I've decided to try one of these. First one I've loaded up is Paranoia Agent. We'll see how it goes
It was alright. I got it, but didn't dig it. Not sure if I'll continue watching. Thinking Now and Then, Here and there would have been a better choice.
EDIT: So I watched the first couple minutes of Now and Then, Here and There. The main character seemed annoying but other aspects made me want to watch more. Well animated and well dubbed with a pretty good soundtrack. I ended up staying up too late and watching the whole first episode. Pretty sure I'll watch more, despite it being different from what I'd normally watch.

I really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop(plus it has great opening music). Ghost in the Shell was/is really cool to me. Mystery and action done rather well.
Akira is a classic.
Hey not to derail the thread but more than a few years ago I was watching this anime about these military type guys that lived in a space station and would come down to Earth for supplies and /or survivors.
They find a guy(or girl,I can`t remember) that just came out of a frozen stasis pod.He has no clue what`s going on....
And the whole time they battle these weird bulky creatures that seem to have taken over the Earth.
I do remember that at the end of the series they find out that the "monsters" are modified/evolved/lab accidents that used to be regular people. The other thing I remember was the sound of crickets in the background of the show.
If anyone knows what I`m taking about,that would be awesome.

Fan of older anime here. All time fav for me is Tekkaman Blade. Others you might find interesting include Samurai Troopers (I think the English version was renamed Ronin Warriors...) original Gundam, Gundam Z & ZZ, Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman (butchered in English as Battle of the Planets) and Nadia.
I dunno if that works for the OP, but I'm a big Gundam fan (and giant robots in general
). For add'l Gundam goodness, Char's Counterattack is absolutely epic, same for GW: Endless Waltz. And while it was short, 08th MS Team was also a good series.Back to the OP, he may want to look into Blue Submarine No. 6, and the first Appleseed movie (the CGI version) was also really good.

Has no one else seen berserk? I went through my big anime phase and berserk is one of the only ones I'll still watch.
