Help me identify a speaker

Hey guys,

I know this photo might not be enough but I have a pretty solid suspicion about one of my speakers in the aguilar db210 not being original.

I bought it used from UK and today when I opened it I realised that the speakers aren't the same as in my aguilar db410 cab. Also, the baffle of one looks very weird.

Should I open a dispute over it? Aguilar speakers aren't exactly cheap.

Below are the photos of my db210 and db410 - obviously, the speakers aren't even physically the same.

I would appreciate any info on this.

To add, the "murky" one appears to be the original speaker, but it seems as if it has been under some heavy repairs... The other speaker seems to be something completely else, judging by the photo on aguilars website. All of these speakers are 8 ohm btw. Or supposed to be.

You're correct, those are speakers!

Seriously though, I'd be in touch with the manufacturer getting that speaker sorted out.

Ok I decided to unscrew the speakers out and my suspicion is correct. The one on the left is an Eminence Delta10A speaker, while the glued one is an Aguilar JDK10A.

So. Someone blew stuff up at one point. Not sure if it was him or someone before him. Point is, the cab is not in an original state while I paid a fair used price for an original.

Paypal dispute?

The drivers in the 210 are obviously different, just look at the surrounds. You'd have to pull them to have a chance at identifying them. Not that there's anything all that special about the Aggie driver, it's an OEM Eminence, the 56 oz magnet means it's middle range, and the replacement might be better. But it might not, and if the specs are way off it won't work right.

Edit: after seeing your later post the Delta 10 may not be that far off, the magnet is the same, but it's a stamped steel frame, not cast aluminum. If it sounds OK I'd be inclined to keep it, but if not open a claim ASAP.

Well it looks like that the Aggie driver is based on the delta 10A anyways but with a certain twist apparently. Anyways, that sucks. I want an original undamaged driver in there, otherwise I could DIY a similar cab for much less $. :/

Obviously one speaker has been damaged beyond repair and was replaced with a probably cheaper alternative. The other one has obviously been repaired.

Edit: Yes, the Delta10A costs 88€ on Thomann in Germany which is obviously way cheaper as an original aggie driver.

Hey, thanks for your response.

Yes, it certainly feels similar, but you know... If you already own an aggie than it could as well be a real aggie. It doesn't sound bad... but there is definitely a difference in sound between my db410 and that 210. Granted, it has more speaker surface and sounds deeper, but... man I don't know really. Hard to compare different cabs. The db210 is also shallower so that definitely also affects the way it sounds.

It’s probably a caveat emptor situation. The guy who sold it might not even have known anything was changed from factory spec.

And this is indeed the case. The seller has responded and claims to have been unaware of this condition and of course rightfully doubts my sincerity as well. What am I supposed to do? I don't want to go hard on the guy obviously but this needs to get fixed.

I always double check my gear before I sell it to make sure there are no unwanted anomalies that would potentially trouble the buyer later. I find it immoral to resell this cab further on to someone in a state like this. I couldn't get over that.
I am also very pedantic about my gear and mentally cannot get over the fact that this cab isn't in its original state.

I offered him a full refund or helping me cover the cost of two new aguilar replacement speakers 50-50. Is this a fair offer? I believe it is but am not sure since this is the first time this happened to me and I have traded a lot of stuff in my lifetime so I have zero experience with it.

Yeah! I think you're screwed.
Just because the seller didn't disclose, even if he knew, it seems you'd have to prove somehow that he overtly misrepresented the cab as being all original. If he did specifically say it was all original, you might have something.

When I buy on line, I ask a lot of hard questions, just so I have a record of what the seller was telling me.

In this case, I'd ask.
Are all of the drivers original?
Has there been any damage or abuse?
How was this cab used? Gigging or just at home?
Are there any other issues that I should be aware of?
Stuff like that.

No response from the seller tells you something.

Good luck.

The speaker on the bottom is ruined, the repair attempt was a simple hack job that wouldn't have worked in the best of circumstances. The top speaker is not original and likely have a totally different voicing from the originals.

I recommend giving Aguilar a call and see what it would cost to get the proper drivers (it's likely these drivers may have been updated as they are the old style cone/surround geometry), but they will know for sure.

IMO, I would not consider this cabinet in any kind of reasonable condition and would dispute it with the seller. Perhaps you guys could come to a compromise where you pay half and he pays half but you end up with a (real) like new performing cabinet.

As a side note, it looks like 3 of the 4 drivers have the beginning of this kind of damage as well. It's common with this cone edge geometry used at high power, which is why the industry as a whole has moved away from it.

Yeah so the seller responded back and does not want to deal with it. I have opened a dispute on paypal, hopefully I can do something about it.

Agedhorse, I will post a close up photos of each speaker in the DB410. I would be very pleased if you could tell me whether the rest of the speakers are okay or not.

Absolutely dispute it, the cabinet is no good as it is.

Hopefully you didn't buy the 410 from the same seller...
