another vote for "natural" (specifically, danish oil finish or french polish)...putting any form of paint or plastic on that wood would be just plain wrong

Here's my 2012 Select Jazz...one reason I bought it is because of the top. I know that Sadowsky has some nice flamed tops as well. I prefer the tort, which is the current configuration.
By far, the coolest bass I have ever seen was a whiteburst 4 string Brubaker. It was absolutely amazing looking! Local funk/R&B band I love going to see.
Whiteburst would look killer on that Jazz with that body and neck!

The other day I thought the sunset made the sky look like a quilted maple top with a blue dye to cherryburst finish. I think you should do it!

That whiteburst reminds me of a Cinnabon.

I've run through a bunch of possible colors in my mind and I've gone all over the internet looking for pic but it'd be great if I could see some pics of jazz basses with figured maple tops and trans finishes from the TB crew.
What color is the hardware (black, chrome, gold)?
What color is the fretboard (ebony, rosewood, maple, other)?

What's up K - We met briefly at a bass gathering in Ashburn, VA, where we all watched Ritter on Skype.
Anyway, you can't go wrong with blue clearcoat - I love this Modulus Genesis here. I have one in this color but not the insane quilt like in this pic. Amber is also a nice coloration. Something in a deep burnt orange may be a good standout ticket too!

You could also take a peek at this old thread I made a few months back with an identical quandary. Though there aren't many J's, there sure are a lot of purty colors.

You surely weren't planning to go solid when you picked that top(beautiful!!). Color is a really personal thing. For ideas I'd look to contemporary builders that use a lot of high-end woods. There's a lot of great shops kicking-out great finishes. I like these a lot: Invalid Link Removed

It's a local guy, Darron Morfino. He goes by Morfman6 here on the forums. I was actually thinking of having a brown stain done, actually so it's great to see how that actually looks on a bass. Right now the finishes I'm thinking about the most are:
- Brown stain or satin
- Sadowksy-style '59 burst
- 3-tone burst

I agree that you should pick something that accentuates the wood grain... It's a nice looking piece of wood. It'd be a shame to cover it up. I like the birds eye maple fretboard too. Are you going to go matching headstock? it looks like the headstock is different to the fretboard. Of course that may just be the angle.
