Help troubleshooting Jazz bass

I have a Squier Jazz bass - just bought a couple weeks ago. I haven't really been playing it because it is really noisy. I have had several J basses and also did some pickup swapping, so I'm familiar with the single coil noise in my room. But what is new here is that it doesn't go way when both pickups are fully on. All my other J type basses would go as silent as a P bass with both pickups on.

What I have done:
Opened things up and noticed no shielding. While I don't think that would likely be the culprit (both pickups on should cancel any common noise), I went ahead and fully shielded the electronic and pickup cavities. I carefully checked they I get near zero ohms between all the cavities. Also check ground at the bridge, output jack, all 3 pots etc. Everything looks good. Soldering looks good and normal.

I also checked that the pickup magnets are opposite polarity. My understanding is that to cancel radiated pickup noise, the coils are wound in opposite directions. The inverted noise from one cancels the non-inverted noise of the other. So to make sure the string vibration induced signal also doesn't cancel, the magnetic poles are in opposite direction, so the double inversion of one pickup matches the non-inverted signal of the other. Otherwise they would mostly cancel.

Here's what I hear. The neck pickup is low noise, significantly better after adding the shielding. The bridge pickup is very noisy and when added to the neck pickup the noise doesn't go away. It might drop off slightly at 100% both pickups. It is orientation sensitive, which is normal for single coil pickups in my music room.

So I'm trying to figure out what else I can do to troubleshoot and try to fix this. Have I done enough to rule out everything except the pickups themselves? Is it possible there is something wrong with them? Maybe some sort of internal shielding problem, or they aren't properly "matched"? Or could it be that just the bridge pickup is faulty since it is the noisier one? It seems unlikely that they are improperly wound (both same direction) because besides the noise, I get the normal scooped J bass sound with both pickups on. Besides the noise they sound normal. They are also at near equal volume when run separately.

One other thing to note: I had this same problem with another bass, exact same model. I exchanged it for this one and was disappointed to find the noise was still there. I decided to keep it, thinking that anything related to noise and electronics can be fixed, often easily.

Does your bass have a pick guard? If so, did you shield the bottom of the PG? Might not help, but won't hurt.
Be sure there is some copper overlap/contact between cavity and guard.

Can you swap pickup positions. There might be a slight length difference, but doing so might tell you if it's a bad pickup or related to their position.

The pickguard is gold anodized aluminum and is in contact with the overlap surrounding the neck pickup. I confirmed it is grounded. It seems to be the bridge pickup giving me the trouble.

These are different size pickups and in my experience you really can't swap them because the mounting bosses are in different positions.

If I run out of ideas I could pull the pickups from my other jazz bass and install them in this one. I don't really like those pickups so it would just be temporary. I might go ahead and remove those tonight. I'm thinking of parting out that bass anyway.

Is the ground wire from the bridge connected and have continuity? Use a meter and check from anywhere on bridge to the sleeve on the cable

Yes, the bridge shows ~0 ohms to the cable sleeve. Everything that should be grounded appears to be well connected to each other with <1 ohm resistance.

I attached a few pictures of the inside of the control plate. Besides a little too much solder on the white wire on the middle pot, looks OK to me.

Are the pole pieces in the pickup grounded? If not, try a strip of copper tape across the bottoms of the poles, then ground that tape.

If you have any shielded cable, i.e. standard 4-conductor pickup lead or gibson style cable with a mesh sheath, try replacing the pickup leads with that.

Hum cancelling coils (i.e. two J singles RWRP) only really addresses noise picked up evenly in both coils. If you have noise being picked up elsewhere in the wiring, or noise that is somehow uneven between the coils, the humbucking nature of RWRP doesn't help at all. So, in a situation like yours, my first stop is always shielding. You've addressed that. The next stop is the pickups themselves, making sure they're not damaged and they're properly grounded. After that, the wiring. Sometimes these problems are hard to diagnose so you have to try a systemic approach.

Check your grounds. Maybe even re-solder them.

You say sheilding is in place and grounded, so there's either something with your power in your house/room/etc., or it could just be a somewhat "bad" connection in your wiring. That happens.

As dwizum indicated, the noise-cancelling only works if both pickups are getting the same "noise" - they have to match exactly, or it doesn't cancel. So it seems the bridge pickup(or associated wiring) may be the source of the problem.

I have carefully checked the ground connection of both shielded cavities, electronics cavity shielding (which actually connects directly to the neck pickup cavity), the bridge, the case of the 3 pots, the grounded terminal of the two volume pots, the cable jacket and the ground connection at the output jack. Everything is <1 ohm.

I know my music room is noisy. I plugged my other Jazz bass into the same cable last night and confirmed that it produces the "normal" dual-single coil noise I expect in my music room. Similar noise levels with each pickup solo, dead silent with both fully on. That bass has Fender 75th anniversary J bass pickups in it.

Next steps:
1. I will see if I can ground the magnets on the bridge pickup from the top as an experiment - see if it has any impact on noise (as dwizum suggested). If this does nothing:

2. Disconnect the pickups and measure the resistance. Might as well check that (as soflbass suggested). I really hate unsoldering connections on the potentiometer case though. I worry about over heating the part. You have to dump in a lot of heat to get that solder to melt. (Why don't they put little soldering tabs on these pot cases?)

I have to say, what is really puzzling me at this point is how quiet the Neck pickup is when solo. It isn't dead quiet, but the noise level is very low for a single coil. The bridge pickup is just about normal. The neck pickup wiring is better shielded than the bridge pickup because it runs under the metal pickguard and control plate. The bridge signal runs through a drilled hole in the body that is unshielded. So maybe the root of the problem is that I need to do what dwizum suggested, shield the wire in that little 2 or 3 inch section. Maybe I can do that with copper tape?? Hmmm...

I tried ground the bridge pickup magnets using copper tape in contact with the top control plate. There was no noticeable difference in the noise level. I also tried covering the entire front area of the bass with a grounded copper sheet (8.5x11"). That also did not seem to change the noise level.

Here's a recording of what I hear. Approx time stamps:
0:00 - both pickups at 0
0:05 - bridge pickup turned on
0:10 - neck pickup turned on (both on full)
0:15 - bridge pickup turned off
0:20 - neck pickup turned off

The bridge pickup has a clear higher frequency noise compared to the neck pickup which is basically a low hum.

Also wanted to add - ignoring the hum, these pickups sound great to me. If I could get dead silent with both pickups fully on like I have in the past with other J basses, I would be really happy with the sound of this instrument!

Yes it sucks to have to desolder any connections to the pot. If you want to properly Shield the bridge pickup, you can look into getting some shielded wire. The Wire has an insulation around the center wire and then on top of that it has a foil shielding that completely surrounds the center wire which you would then connect to ground.

You can also wrap the pickup wire with copper foil tape and then ground that to both sides of the shielding.

Have you actually tried reversing the phase on one of the pickups? Forget about magnet polarity and such- don't assume anything is so just because it's from the factory. Assembly workers have off days too.

You need to determine if it's electromagnetic or electrostatic noise being picked up. Electromagnetic tends to be more directional and by moving the guitar around, a null point will will be readily found. If this is the case, then a shielded pickup cover may help somewhat. See if the source is the transformer on your amp, or other nearby equipment by bringing the bass closer to the equipment and noting if the noise gets more intense.

It is definitely orientation dependent, and like other jazz basses I've had, seems to output minimum noise when oriented in a North/South direction.

I'll try twisting the wires when I add the wire shield tonight. Might as well throw everything I can at it!
 
Sounds like that bridge pickup is the problem, as from what you describe the hum on the neck pu is in the acceptable range as a single coil?

I would try replacing it but as a first step you might try simply reversing the polarity of the bridge pu?

I’m not sure if this is related or helpful but on my ‘97 MIM Jazz (stock w/ 2 equal non hum cancelling PUs) I had the ceramic magnets flipped on the bridge pu and then wired with reverse polarity. Bingo - humcancelling and dead quiet with both PUs on. I did not do it myself but was a simple fix at the local luthier.
 
My 1-1/2 cents says, I would first of all unsolder the Bridge pickup and see how that sounds, then re-solder bridge and unsolder neck, then if still noisy, re-solder bridge pickup to the neck pot. This will tell if the pickup is crappy or the pot may need replaced. Take it one step at a time.
I have seen crappy pots and cheap jacks mess up a basses tones and then replace them all and wow great tones and quieter...Just a thought.
Personally I would put in 3 new CTS pots, Orange cap 47 and Switchcraft jack. But that's just what I do on my cheaper basses.
