Help with British honey substitute

Americans aren't big malt vinegar fans. Do you have any idea what these people put on fish?

TARTAR SAUCE. For those of you who don't know what TARTAR SAUCE is, it's like mayonnaise, with chunks of pickles and capers. It's not tasty at all. It's heavy and nasty, and ruins fish.

When I pour nice malt vinegar on my fish, they look at me like I'm nuts.

Of course, the joke's on them.

Well, I grew up on the east coast of the US, so I thoroughly enjoy tartar sauce. My ex was born in Britain, she got me hooked on all sorts of English food stuffs. So now I'm some kind of freakish anomaly that uses malt vinegar and tartar sauce on fish at the same time. :p

Also, +500000 on HP sauce. That stuff is delicious.

...and Crunchie Bars. (not together obviously lol)

Didn't realise there were no Crunchies in the US, that sucks.

Though I do wish we had Peanut butter M&Ms, Jolly Ranchers and Big Red over here :(

I hate tartar sauce too. Give me malt vinegar any day. Or better still a nice piece of blackened fish.

I've lived in America my whole life and have never had or even heard of biscuits and gravy, so you can't tell me it's ubiquitous.

Really? Youve never heard of them?
You should be able to find them in any IHOP or Dennys, or other breakfast diner.
Often times theyre made with country gravy, but they can be found served with brown gravy as well.

This has been an interesting and civil discussion of baked goods in the English speaking world. I'm of French Canadian/ English heritage, so the French part interests me too I''m also a Northerner who now lives in the South, so I've been hit from all directions. Maybe I can add a point or two.
Biscuit Gravy vs. Brown Gravy. I grew up on brown. Roast Beef on Sundays. I'm convinced that if you have good gravy you can eat a plate of rusty nails, and since I hated potatoes, it rescued me every Sunday. My wife's dad had the tradition of putting brown gravy on pancakes. Yum !
Re: Biscuit gravy, which I did not grow up on, it can indeed taste like wallpaper paste, but someone who really knows how to cook it and season it right, it's mahvelous stuff. More sausage bits, better.Skimp on ingredients and don't cook it long enough, it tastes like raw flour. Needs time and love, kind of like a good roux.
I've had malt vinegar and it's good, but when it comes to a good well cooked piece of fish, just salt for me. Save the Tartar sauce for the fries (chips) I had a friend years ago turn me on to this, I despise ketchup on fries. Don't knock it till you have tried it. Tartar sauces are not created equal either, they can range from gross to glorious. I like ones that are more on the salty savory side as opposed to sweet pickle relish varieties.
Seems nobody mentioned Coleman's mustard in the condiment department. Enjoyed that too.

For the British, it's like having slightly moister scones in a creamy sauce.
Confirmation that we make scones the same way. Your post is appreciated.

Apart from grits. What's that all about? Grainy, cheese-flavoured porridge? I don't know why anyone would do that.
Cheese flavored? As in with cheese in them? That does sound gross. I usually flavored them with jelly, but I also haven't eaten them in years. I usually hear a comparison on polenta[sp?], not porridge.
