Very sad.

What I find especially sad is that it's getting harder and harder to find jazz guitarists playing in that style. Now, I'll be the first to rail against "neo-traditionalists" and Museum Caretakers in the music industry, especially in jazz (Wynton, are ya listening?). But with Herb's style of jazz guitar I almost feel like it's an Endangered Species: Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Tal Farlow, Barney Kessel, now Herb Ellis...gone. When Kenny Burrell and Pat Martino and George Benson and Jim Hall pass away, is anyone gonna be left to carry that torch?

...at least, anyone who's not playing through a chorus pedal or over a smooth R&B groove with an overdubbed string section?

I'll miss Herb's purity, is what I'm saying.

I was lucky enough to see him in the '90s. It was such a special show, the club owner came up at the end and pretty much begged him to come back the next night. Don't see that very often.
