I really like the concept at play here. There is no reason you shouldn't be able to get close to a Rickenbacker tone from a P bass with the right sort of pickups in the right sort of locations. Oddly enough very few bother. I've gored a few cheap basses to try and get close, but never tried this hard!

With a wee bit of smoothing the pickguard outline could look really nice. I would cut a new pickguard and go from there.

Say, how much weight do you reckon you could shave off a P body with these additional routes?
I really like everything about my #2 P bass BUT the weight. It is about 3 lbs. more than #1.
I know pickups too have weight. But I think this is a really dense piece of ash.

I'd throw this one I did a couple months ago into the club! Originally a 1987 Peavey Patriot, now it's RicRiot. The original Super Ferrite (bridge) single coil pickup is 1/8" neckward from the Ric position, so I added another Super Ferrite in the Ric neck position, moved the jack to the side and added a 3-way switch. Those pickups in those locations do the Ric thing really well.

I'm really waiting for those that belong to the Church Of Ric, or the higher order of the Precision to come in and voice their disdain for this sacrilege

Haha! I feel P guys would be more relaxed about this vs Ric guys. There are so many modded Ps out there, plus basses like the L1000 & T-45 that are just a pickup change away from a P. I know many a player (like myself) that prefer the feel of a Fender vs the feel of a Ric. I have played 2 Rics that were comfortable and familiar, but dozens and dozens and dozens of Fenders and Fender derivatives that are.

Dave Meros did it years ago with an OLP. He has as good a Ric tone as anyone. And he does it without those "Ric tone woods".

Thanks! I really should either sell this, or convert it to a 5 string. I never play it as is, and it sounds really good. Those Classic Amplification pickups really cop the Ric sound, and of course, it helps they're close to the right locations.

You’re welcome. I’m still putting my eyes back in my head after seeing those Devil builds of yours.

Yup! And indeed the devil is in the details. The right pickups (and matching electronics) in the correct position on the correct scale length goes a long way towards getting that a trademark timbre.
