Seeing it all maple makes me want to see it stained some improbable color all over, like a faint transparent turquoise. Everywhere p'up covers, fingerboard, all of it.

Thank you. I've got a cool idea for what I'm going to do with the finish, but it's still in the works. It's not going to be as radical as the turquoise you suggested, though. When Brad Johnson came over he brought a Brubaker bass that had a transparent burst black even on the fingerboard. It was an incredibly cool bass!

Thanks man! this is the half cut poplar and maple top I had laying around when you visited. I'm hoping these pickups will sound good. I'll let you know when it's done, maybe I can come visit you this time, bring this bass and check out your collection.

He's usually in during the day on weekdays, weekends he has gigs and family stuff. I know he has a gig tonight and one tomorrow night. I'll check with him and see how his schedule is looking.
oops! sorry about that, I missed your questions.
I'm using 43AWG enamel insulated wire. They've got about 10k windings (you can see that pic of one of them is marked N for neck and 10.3 for 10,300 windings, bridge has 10,500). Thinner wire will give you greater DC resistance and output. I have not wound pickups this hot before, but was very impressed by a set of Nordstrand Big Singles I heard and wanted to shoot for something along those lines (I'm pretty sure they used 42 AWG, though, so these should sound different). They were very loud and, like you said, had pronounced lower mids. They were not sparkly, but it should be good for slapping. I'll post sound clips when it's finished ...if it ever warms up here in D.C.
I'm also going to use 43 AWG in the dual coils for the headless, because I want to fit both bobbins in a P2 size wooden cover and they are both pretty small, so I can't get a lot of 42AWG windings in them.
I know thos clamps have soft pads but you scare me not putting any blocks between.

chill ...lots more sanding needed and the fingerboard is not leveled.
I have a quick question about wiring home made pickups. I am going to try and build homemade pick ups myself. I read up about how to coil it and magnet place ment I just dont know where you hook the wires to. Is it at either ends of the wires you used to coil?
I use bronze eyelets sold by a crafts online store (scrap queen or something). I drill a 1/16" hole, and press fit the eyelet. The coil wire is looped through the eyelet 5-10 times before winding, and after it on the other eyelet. You can then insert your hookup wire through the eyelet and solder ...the heat from the soldering iron will melt the insulation on the coil wire and make a good solid connection.
