Hey I saw that guy last night...

There is another "Bass Player" here locally that is always coming to our gigs and pestering me to play...I made the mistake of letting him come up a couple of times a few years ago, and he now thinks the minute he walks in the room, I should just stop playing and let him come up. the dude is a good player, and does a lot of sub gigs around town...but he's super busy and plays way too much in everything, thinking he's impressing us all. He's always talking crap about how utterly fantastic and amazing and professional he is.

He wears me out with the constant looks and asking to come up. To be honest I think he wants my gig...and has tried for years to muscle in. Always has a comment about how my action is just way too high for him (so don't touch my bass ever again then), and how he has done this and that, and how I should do this and that to different songs because that's how "he" would play them.

He also pulls other members of the band to the side to try to get them to asked him to play. We have an inside joke now and the rest of the band calls him my "Bass Nemesis"..."here comes your Nemesis again!...LOL"

we had a guy come on stage drunk in the middle of the set and go up to the guitarist, stand in front of him and try to strum the strings (and succeed) while the guitarist was still playing. dude was totally wasted. eventually a friend of the band grabbed him by the shirt and dragged him off...

what LEGAL rights does an individual/band have in situations like that? can you kick douchenozzles off the stage, literally? if they break their head/neck and die, are YOU libel?

is it the bar's fault?

Wow...I had a guy, he'd stand in between me and my floor fan at outside gigs, he'd stand by my monitor making these insane faces (i can only assume because he was moved almost to the point of orgasm by our music), was always extremely loud, had inappropriate banter in between songs....so yeah, our rythm guitar player drove me crazy! I ended up leaving the band.

well getting up in your business could amount to assault, but yes i'm sure you'd still be liable if you hurt them while kicking them off.

We had that guy's thinner cousin show up with a sax, walk onstage and try to play to one of our songs (original band). On my count we all stopped and stared at him with a nice stink eye. The crowd laughed him offstage. It twas great.

Later on people thought that we staged it for comedy sake.

Strictly speaking, it should never even come to that...

If there is a problem with douchebags storming the stage, it belongs to the venue management - NOT to the band that happens to be playing there. If the venue can't - or won't - provide security sufficient to protect the band from being molested, that's THEIR failure - not the band's.

Ideally, the way this should be handled is with direct communication between the band and the venue management - well in advance of the performance. The venue's responsibility for security should made a non-negotiable precondition to the band's performance - preferably as a clause in a written, signed contract - but at the very least, as a spoken "gentlemen's agreement" (assuming they really are gentlemen)...

This is slightly tangential, but your story reminds me of the elderly people who, attending a wedding reception, *always* manage to pick the table closest to one of the PA speakers... and then complain to the band about the volume. "It's awful!! Can't you do something???" :scowl:

It's amazing! "THAT GUY" can warp time and space! He was at my gig too!!! And sometimes he shows up in the guise of "THAT GIRL". Must be great to be a superhero.

I keep a bottle of syrup of ipecac in my gig bag for such occasions. I can't say how to use it, but you'll figure it out.

There's a guy around here (probably mid-fifties) who shows up to blues shows with a backpack full of tambourines, maracas, shakers, etc.

He plants himself in the front row and then 'plays' along with the band. I'm sure you can guess how rhythmically challenged he is...


Did I mention his incredibly bad body odor?

That guy, sad to say ... is my dad. Then he tells the band to take a break so his Barbershop Quartet can sing a few songs ....

All that said, I will miss him when he's gone.

You can be upset and play it cool; goes for any job in the service industry. I think they did a very professional thing playing through it and shaking his hand etc. the video maybe not so much but worth it.

Considering other options like forcing him off stage themselves may have killed the vibe even more for the whole night. But this is where I agree it's not their responsibility but the venue's staff/security to handle the matter.
