Double Bass Hey is that an OBOE?

Just my two cents.

I don't really think it's that much of an inconvenience to answer a silly question like "Is that a violin/cello/fiddle/oboe/big tuba/(personal experience) drum set?"

Yes there is a problem with music education in America so we might as well start fixing it by telling a person that there is a difference between a bass and an oboe.

Incredibly well said! :D

I just had an eye surgeon ask me what a double bass was and did I blow into it? (a very long story about pressure in the eye) I was stunned to say the least. Sigh, all I could think of was: THIS is what a college education generates these days?
Salty Dog

Because it isn't.
Is it really necessary to splice words? Some call the instrument an upright bass. That's a fact. It is a name recognized by many. If we really can't get past my misuse of the word, then I'll rephrase it so everybody understads. I get it if one word just threw you off so much you couldn't interpret the rest of the sentence.
Why is it so hard for people to just take a maximum of 10 seconds out of their day to say "It's a double bass"?
There. Now we can quit being petty about my post.

When you get annoyed and answer with a clearly sarcastic tone or even get angry with someone then you're giving into the classical musician elitism that most people don't enjoy about classical music and classical musicians. In New York I'm usually stuck with someone on the subway who doesn't know much about music so I can either be rude about it or I can take 5 minutes from my day to educate someone about classical music. Perfect.

As a former clarinet player, I don't understand how oboe got confused with DB. Still, even though it's not "PC," calling it a "bass violin" does paint a better word picture than "double bass" to an obvious non-musician, who might actually remember the term instead of "oboe." OK--I'll go back to the BG forums now. :hiding:
