So yeah, I haven't noticed a club for these rather underrated basses. Post your Grinds; modded, stock, whatever. This thread is for us.

Also, what's an ideal string height for a fretless? I am trying to get the action lower without sacrificing playability and right now it's a bit high. I know the nut needs to be reworked but I feel uneasy about that...might as well take it into a shop.

I understand what you mean, but is that a problem to have a club for this bass? Heck, we have clubs for basses made in China.


Sorry for being rather cold, but I did do some searching for a previous club if there was one and I didn't see anything in the rules concerning making clubs about basses and their factory locations. :/

i've had a Grind for a number of years, i figured it was a cheaper version of their Cirrus. a couple of years later i bought a Cirrus, & it never really seemed to fit into the things that i was playing, so i dumped it, but i still rock my Grind. alot of times, i'll play the Grind onstage over my Fenders, ( unlike the guy above, i could care less WHERE it's made, i care HOW it sounds )

would love to find a deal like you've found, & turn one into a fretless

may dig out a photo later

How I got a good deal? The person bought it new around 2003 and defretted it but never touched it (strings are old but barely used, so they are like new, kinda), and was wanting to move some excess stuff out, including this Grind.

He wanted to sell it to me for 50 but all I had were $20 bills so I gave him 60. Nice guy too, and he knew what he was doing (IE, he wasn't a bedroom player but rather a traveling musician endorsed by Spector).

True Enough. It's no problem at all. I typically celebrate all things that are Peavey! I've had my share of their High End Offerings, as well as their Econo-Lines. Loved them all!

But I've not warmed up to their OffShore Offereings yet...And looked at with the Right Spin, Ho Chi Mihn is their equivilant of our George Washington.

Good tone, bad quality=the Grind NTB 5 that I bought when they were first introduced. I liked the look of the bass and it's strong passive tone but the jack was the weak spot on mines. I tried a few others in stores and my hands always got cut by the frets. After one year I traded mine for a 5 string Brawley.

Weird. I tried a 5 in a store and it never marked up any of my hands. The jack was loose but I see that as the bass was sitting in a closet for 5 years collecting dust rather than shoddy craftsmanship.

The 2003 (when did they come out, by the way?) that I have right now is fine. Granted it's fretless so there are no frets that cut up my hands, but I find the quality to be fine.

I'm tempted to put a set of Chrome flats on it even though the current strings, despite being 5 years old, are barely used. Should I get new ones?

I'm even tempted to put on rounds but I heard those are bad for fretless basses.

YMMV I guess.

Several years ago I was going to buy one of those online. I was talking to the sales person over the phone. She said it had a 35 inch neck. I told her I thought it had a 34, which is what I wanted. I didn't go through with the order. I'm sure a 35 inch neck is fine for a lot of people but I'm mostly used to short scales basses, and sometimes ones with 34 inch necks.

I own a Grind, also a Cirrus BXP (one of the good ones...from Indonesia). Sound-wise, they're totally different, but both sit well in the mix. Given my druthers in the electronics dept, I'd prefer the Cirrus. But that Grind is such a sweetheart to play...

I'm not playing either of them a whole lot right now, mostly jammin in my classic rock band with 4 strings. But when I pick up that Grind I wish I had the opportunity to use it more...

Since I bought my Grind a coupla weeks ago, Ive' been trying it out with various effects pedals that I have.

I hit upon a great sound today:

Grind: vol and tone knobs at 1/2 mid point

>Boss ODB-3: set to just a bit of distortion - using the vol and tone tone knobs like a preamp (for the passive Grind)

> Fuzzhugger ArcFlash fuzz: set at medium effect. I think any distortion pedal can be inserted here.

This affords a really nice middle of the road rock sound that can be tweaked by increasing/decreasing the distortion on the fuzz box and/or the tone on the ODB-3.

BTW - I first tried my SansAmp BDDI in place of the ODB-3, but it sucked out too much mid.

I don't own a grind yet but I'm real close to pulling the trigger on one. I saw one on Ebay for $200. But the guy wouldn't take a cashiers check and I don't have a Paypal account. I don't like having my credit card numbers in cyberspace.
