As the title says, I'm a newbie here in a sense. I've browsed the forums before but finally decided yesterday to become a supporting member although I think I've had a membership for a while but never posted, just perused.
Just a quick intro on how I got into bass. My brother who is older has always loved music and played guitar off and on and I decided when I was young to start bass lessons because I love the sounds of the bass. Being young I didn't take them too seriously, could have been my teacher as well but I ended up getting more into sports. As I got older I started getting more into rock and classic rock and of course grew up listening to Metallica, Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers. I have many bands that I enjoy listening to but the most influential bassists have been Les Claypool and Ryan Martinie.
Anyway I've dabbled here and there on the bass over the past couple of years. When I say dabble I mean read tabs and try to learn songs only for a couple of months playing maybe 1-3 times a week for about 30 minutes to an hour. Needless to say I didn't learn too much but I have been playing seriously since December of last year. By seriously I mean every day or every other day as time permits for 1-2 hours or more. I've been so serious I am back to taking lessons so I can learn music theory from a classically trained teacher who now plays bass as well. I also joined a band recently so I can get used to playing with others and it's going well. Doing covers mostly but not ready to gig yet but hopefully getting there. I have no crazy dreams about becoming a professional like some of the artists most of us listen to since I am just now really starting at 30 years old but I do have aspirations to at least be in a local band who does some gigging.
