i'm getting a 13-string/11-string double neck jerzy drozd as we speak: midi, firewire, piezos, and 8 custom-made neo magnetic pickups.

it will also feature a self-cleaning neck, an unlined northern imbuia 100-year-old ebony fretless board with a 21-piece spalted nigerian wenge and palo de rosa stringers, individual outputs for each string, a built-in mac g5 (to record right inside the bass! - no sound degradation. . . ) and a built-in tube compressor (gotta keep the dynamics under control with so many strings.) jerzy is still working around the "challenge" of the electronics.

my two 8 strings are tuned f#-b-E-A-D-G-b-e. i've tuned the black one with the maple board on the couch with a low c# experimentally, but i haven't worked that into anything yet.

Cool! What kind of string diameter/scale length do you prefer for the f# (and the low-c# for that matter)?

Cool! What kind of string diameter/scale length do you prefer for the f# (and the low-c# for that matter)?

the 8's and the ritter are 35", all the others are 34". i've found that rigid neck is more important to a tight low string than scale length, all other things being equal. i've played 36" instruments with wangy necks that had pretty weak low b's compared to mine.

for a low c# i use a .195" - you should ask jauqo-iiix here at the site about these bad boys, he's the guy who first had them made for him. for the rest, starting at low f# i use .165"-.135"-.107"-.078"-.055"-.035"-.030"-.025", and on the bass with the high a i use a .018" unwound string. i've used sr2000's for a long time, but i'm developing a relationship with SIT strings and am going to start using them soon. i've been using SIT low f#'s and low c#'s for a few years now.

i wish there were more inexpensive 7 string options out there (cough CONKLIN cough). i love the idea of having one F#BEADGC but not sure if I'd actually be comfortable with it. hm.

anybody know why they discontinued the GT series?

bill is moving on to a slightly higher quality and slightly more expensive, line called the new century series. these are going to be machine made in the u.s. and assembled by conklin folks. i don't know the particulars beyond that.

Very nice collection John! I a newbie to here and bass. Never new more than 6 existed Love the wood in the basses. Thanks for the info on tuning too, got to share this with my bud who had a Geddy.

i thought the new century series had been around for quite awhile. i wouldn't call them "slightly" more expensive either
