Hiding Rickenbacker 4003s5 Dorito Pickups

Greetings from the North,

Since 1969 I've witnessed all kinds of shapes come and go in bassdom. Some that I thought at first would not last did and some of those eventually I accepted and even liked.

3+1 headstocks
Angled frets
Pointy bodies and headstocks
Oval pickups
And even trapezoidal shaped pickups on a Rickenbacker!

The first time I saw them on the 4003/5 I really didn't like the look. But like many new and different things in music the function and look grew on me.

How on EARTH did you get the bass to levitate like that? Don't go and tell me it's just a photo turned sideways, or angled specifically, we both know you can't do that to pictures on the internet!

A self levitating bass, eh? Since this is TB, someone will still complain it's too heavy.

Get some square plastic pickup shells that'll cover the "doritos", cover them in chrome vinyl wrap. Cheap and easy.

I like it stock, but yes a black pickguard looks way better.
But I can't see why you couldn't go to a hobby or plastics supply for some black styrene or vinyl, and make your own rectangle shaped surrounds that incorporate the original mounting screws and put a triangle opening for the pickup. Thick enough material so its flush with the tops of the pickups.

I cant find the thread but recently someone converted a 4003/s/5 to a 4000/5 by covering up the neck pickup and somehow getting the bridge pickup inside the chrome treble pup surround with cover. It looked really nice

I need to hunt that down! Let me know if you have any leads

For those of your that have a fiver, do these pups have the iconic snarl and growl of a four string with traditional pups?

I liked everything about that bass except to me, the B string sounded quieter than the rest.

Are you sure it was the bass and not the amp? A lot of bass amps gain starts falling off below 40hz.

I was just going to compliment Rezdog on how he got the bass to stick to the back of his sofa. Must have something to do with that grid of "black holes".

Can anyone with pickup building knowledge tell me if this pickup can be fixed to equally cover all strings, i.e. the full length of the inside of the pickup?

B-string does not get much metal coverage..

I hated them at first, but I've gotten used to them. Blacked out Jetglo is the way to go.

I think they'd look cool with chrome surrounds, pity nobody makes them aftermarket. The shape turned me off at first, and I still think they should have followed the orientation of the triangular fretboard markers, but it's grown on me a little over time. It's kind of an odd choice aesthetically, but I guess it has some science behind it.
