High end copies

 yeah, tell that to phil lesh and doug wimbish.

In the case of Phil Lesh, remember that he's playing to an audience that looks like this:

So I think his bass is quite fitting. :smug:

lol. you'd think. then again, you'd be amazed at how many dead head bassists have gotten their knickers in a twist about his new choice of instrument.

it's amazing, really, but i guess bassists are, at their core, conservative folks.

Thanks man, I'm not sure what indie rock is?

its the type of rock music played in and around Indianapolis :p

In all seriousness, its just another sub-genre of rock where bands partially fit into several categories. For instance, I would describe Fleet Foxes, The Decemberists, etc. as being indie rock, but I'm sure there are people who would call them art rock, post-grunge, [insert adjective-noun combination here], etc.

(To answer the OP even though it's been answered)

I guess it's why someone will put $10k into a $20k car to trick (or whatever the buzz word is these days) it out versus just buying a $30k car... Looks, nostalgia, whatever. A lot of guys just like how a Mustang looks versus an NSX and would rather have a high-end mustang.
Sorry, I know the question has been answered but I love to talk about basses...

***Big disclaimer for the car guys who are getting geeked out to point out the flaws in my car analogy. I don't care, lol. You got my point.***

Well they're not really my style, if that's what your asking. If I did own that bass, I wouldn't bring it to an indie rock gig.

So they would look "ridiculous" at some gigs but not all? Isn't that why some of the big gun players play boutique basses, and others don't. I think if your first statement "because they look ridiculus on stage" had clairifed that we wouldn't have been at each other as much. I would like to offer my hand (handshake) and make piece with you, Ok.

Alright. Here's a more politically-correct version of my initial post:

"Because they look rediculous on stage when playing certain genres of music that better lend themselves to a classic-styled instrument."

Ok I'm adding this, not because I want to stir the pot. I just want Spencer's thoughts reguarding a couple of my basses. Would you find it ridiculous to play one of these?

No doubt that those are a couple of beautiful pieces of woodwork! I play rock, folk, and blues with a flamed koa top Carvin, so I would probably be okay gigging your basses. I know my bandmates would not mind. And, for the most part, our audience doesn't know a Fender from a Zon, so I doubt they would care.

Thank you for the kind words.

Ah, I just saw you were the builder of those nice basses you posted the picture of. I can understand the frustration of someone coming up with their own 'somewhat different than J Bass' designs, with the fancy wood tops and everything, and then see a lot of us gushing over Sadowsky and Alleva and Lull, etc. basses.

Having gone through a VERY expensive and long 'hippie sandwich/coffee table' stage (my MTD/Fodera/Smith/FBass era:D), I can appreciate the wood work and the beauty of some of these designs (including yours!). However, I've never found all that to improve the tone or playability of the more classic designs (P or J)... just 'change it' a bit. Depending on the players preference, that 'change' can be to the positive or negative. IMO.

Yes I built them, thanks for the comps.
