High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

DC wall power only. No batteries.
There's an always-on (no by-pass switch) unit available. I have that one on the way.
I haven't read about any direct comparisons of fdeck and Broughton.
I also haven't read about any complaints about Broughton.

Yeah, I looked at all those things. I think if I buy a replacement for my FDeck, I would get the L+HPF, just to have the extra options for minimal extra room on my board.

The HPF by itself doesn't really give me any extra functionality. Only different packaging - which I don't foresee spending money to get, just yet.

I was asking if a LPF can do much to help me get more of an upright sound out of my electric.
 
Define "sufficiently". What are you trying to achieve?

I see it has a semi-parametric Low band which goes down to 30 Hz. Assuming it's likely a peak/dip filter (not true High Pass), but there's no reason why you couldn't use it to remove low frequencies if that's what you're after.

so it seems like I could achieve some HPF using my parametric but that would in turn eliminate my ability to use that section of the EQ for tone shaping at higher frequencies. Im just trying to tighten up my low end and eliminate some low freqs that could muddy up the room and/or damage my cab. Probably best to just get a dedicated HPF. Seems like a built in HPF would be a great feature on modern day heads? Maybe they have them, IDK.

Again, what are you trying to achieve by introducing a HPF? Low frequency filtering for speaker protection or increasing amp efficiency? General tone shaping?

Most musical instrument amps will have some form of high pass filtering built in by design, but usually not adjustable. Just basic circuit protection and power optimization stuff.

I think it's pretty standard issue on most quality bass amps now.

Probably best to just get a dedicated HPF.
That would be best for use as an HPF, for the common purpose of HPF, eliminating the LF that can't be (safely) reproduced by the cab and causes problems with the tone if it is.

Then a HPF would be a better tool. They tend to be a steeper slope, and more appropriate alignment for the task.
 
Maybe @agedhorse can educate us on the difference between a parametric EQ and an HPF.

In a similar vein, here's a set of curves I've posted in a few other threads. A friend who had a simple ten band graphic EQ wanted to know why just cutting the lowest fader (32Hz) wouldn't work as well or better than using a dedicated 4th order HPF. And as usual, that just depends on what you are needing and/or wanting to accomplish:

GEQ, -10dB @32Hz:

Note that these are just quick and dirty general case representations, the HPF model being one out of several of my DIY builds. Don't remember specifically which GEQ pedal that was, but IIRC it was a pretty common one.

Are there any alternatives to the Broughton in the UK? Alternatively, how complex would it be for my technician (my wife) to solder up a DIY unit? I will be in the USA next month and could drop hints about an early birthday present... It would be nice to have a couple of 1/2 or 1/4 rack units to sit alongside my PA. A DIY 1/4 unit I could mount with my bass head in its rack as always on. (Actually I have two identical 2u amps in 3u sleeves, but they need some ventilation space.

1) Yes, SFX. There's also a guy from the UK on Basschat who sells knockoffs of the v2 fdeck unit.

2) It's a relatively easy DIY build. But as usual, don't necessarily expect that to be a money saver.

I found a 1u stereo 15 band EQ with a "50Hz" low cut filter tbat seems to be 18dB/oct at 40,Hz, although I am not sure how to read that. That might work well for PA and monitors.
 
Well, I think getting a Broughton always on in June makes sense. I can apparently take back £350 worth of stuff back, so a £45 HPF should be fine. EQ with HPF for the PA. Maybe a second Broughton later, as I like having a backup.

As usual Charlie you've both informed the discussion and demonstrated why a picture is worth a thousand words (or in this case perhaps a thousand bass notes). I'd also add that most anyone who has compared a HPF with simply dropping the lowest EQ fader on a head/amp that really benefits from (badly needs) a HPF will usually hear this difference as well.
