High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

On subsonics, my PA doesn't go super low, and I don't have a sub. Putting backing tracks through the mixer the RCA inputs don't even have filters. The backing tracks I had not even checked for frequency content, so I was surprised at a large gig with subs that there was huge rumble, as these was a lot of subsonic content my PA could not reproduce. I must have been wasting lots of power. I had them turn the subs off.
 
This has been one of the most educational threads I've ever read on TB. So many bass players with impressive sound engineering and electronic knowledge here. Thank you all for sharing your wisdom.
I have a Broughton HPF that I bought mainly for speaker protection/longetivy (Greenboy F112s) but (apparently) my recently-purchased Bergantino Forte has a 40 Hz built-in HPF - so I guess I don't need it for that. But I have discovered that it works great as a "boomy room" fixer. I just use my ear to adjust the filter, which is variable from 20 to 190 Hz. Interestingly, the dial on the Broughton unit is centered at 80 Hz. Is this a "sweet spot" of some kind? I'm sure Josh choose that center for a reason. But it seems high. Thoughts?

Notes:
Fundamental: E,1st harmonic , 41hz. B, 1st harmonic, 31hz.
2nd harmonic of E string = 82hz. Set your HPF to 75hz per @Mike Arnopol.
2nd harmonic of B string = 62hz. Set your HPF to 55hz per @Mike Arnopol

10db down = twice as soft

The Super @Stumbo is all knowing, all seeing, all doing (except of course when he does feel like doing).

Even better, I've been pushing HPFs since @fdeck's V1 or 2. What's that, about 8-10 years?
 
The problem (for SOME players) with an 75Hz HPF is that it affects the fundamental on the higher strings/notes more. The ratio of fundamental to harmonic changes as you move up the fretboard, and also across the different gauge/tension strings. The higher HPF interacts with this ratio and may be an unwelcome effect.
 
IME 30-35 HZ is where you get max utility in HPF with minimal intrusion on anything else. As I start to play around with higher frequencies I can hear a tone shaping effect that is sometimes useful, but not always necessary. That 30-35-40HZ range seems optimal for me for the utility I seek.

Tone shaping that can be useful for overcoming venue acoustics and cab deficiencies. :thumbsup:

Taking it up to 74 Hz seems so counter-intuitive, but the rationale makes sense to my EE brain. And the results are very encouraging. I can't wait for tomorrow night's rehearsal!
 
I have found this info very self-affirming. I have been using an FDeck HPF for a while, almost always with my Promethean 1x10 amp that I use for rehearsals. I haven't been gigging much lately, but rehearsals are weekly. Anyway, just by ear I have ended up running the FDeck cutoff at about the 12:00 position on the knob. The range is (I think) 40 Hz to 140Hz, so I think I've been running it somewhere right aroun 90 Hz, I guess.

It's nice to read some science to explain why something counterintuitive has actually been working for me.

I suggest going FOH to hear how you and the KB player are sitting in the mix. If it's mush onstage it's probably mud FOH.

I can't really deal with 10 fingered KB chords in the mix. Not necessary and inimical to a good band mix.

How about putting an HPF on his stuff around 200. He can still play the chords but won't be in your hz area.

Maybe make a recording or video so he can hear how crappy he sounds. Who's the BL?

I did set up my MG800+MG212 and had to crank low and cut mids for the sound check, but has soon as the PA opened and subs kicked in, I disappeared in the mix... cut low around 10oclock (never done this in my entire musician's life) and boosted the low mids 150-200hz about 2/3oclock, everything else flat, gain just below clipping and master around 2oclock (again, first time ever I boost the master past noon!).... bam! very present in the mix and balanced with the rest of the band!!!

Gotta give credit to my new little magic box, a [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] HPF (!), who saved the night cutting the nasty lows out of the subs (was set around 50-60hz)...

GENZLER for life!

So...The Genzler Magellan has a HPF in it?
Mesa Subway D-800 has one fixed point in it

Do the Markbass heads? SA450 LMII?

My tube preamps and led sled power SWR Stereo 800 does not?

Could this be why we like the girth of led sleds compared to class D and switchmode power amps?
