High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

I use a DAW plugin called rbass. Combining a HPF with the functionality of the plugin, including the harmonic generator, in a digital pedal would be nice.

One of the controls, is frequency:

This simply controls where the process begins (much as in a crossover). Therefore, with the setting shown above (65Hz), all frequencies below 65Hz will have harmonics generated by the system and added by the Intensity control.

That is what I did...and it sounds great...but I fear would limit the lows i would want in a live situation
12db/octave for it, so you may or may not miss something with a 5 string. With a 4 string it's pretty close to perfect.

Looks like you play 5 strings. It's not the hugest jump to where a lot of players have their hpf set with 5 strings in most situations.

TL;DR Turning up the HPF and boosting your bass tone control a bit can give your rig more punch and
tight-bottom-end presence without adding mud.

Bear in mind that what sounds good alone may be wrong with the band... but it sounds like you may be able to get it to work!

When you play with the band, at higher volume, don't be afraid to experiment with the HPF and the bass control.

I generally leave the deep switch off as it adds too much low end for my liking. I have the bright switch on permanently, and tone controls flat. I may add a bit of low mids or high mids sometimes... a bit. But I generally find that I only need small adjustments: having the ability to set the centre frequency means to me that it's more about finding the right frequency and adjust a little.

Where I play a lot is with the HPF and bass control. I found over time that sometimes turning the HPF up *AND* turning bass control up a bit gave me the right amount of tight low end with *punch*. It was not intuitive to me... I mean, by putting the HPF up I was cutting more and more low end, so why would I boost the bass too? Wouldn't it be undoing what I was doing?

But it seems that the result is boosting the very low end in a very controlled manner which adds bottom end 'presence' without mud. I'm not very technical other can explain why that works... but, just try it, experiment *with the band*... Play a bit and see what the controls do TOGETHER, not just each separately.

I've owned the D800+ for about a year now and I'm still in love with this box. I can safely say it's the first amp I've owned where I never felt I was compromising anything.

Of course, a lot of it is to do with having the right cabs for your goals... but you have a hell of an amp there, super versatile... If the cabs you have don't have anything majorly wrong with them (and reading further it looks like you were careful enough) I'm positive you'll find if not the tone you dream of, at least a tone that you can work with and be happy with.

My experience as an audio tech was a bit different than yours, probably because most of my mixing was done at a relatively low SPL at FOH.

In my experience, between the bass amp and all the monitor mixes, the level of muddy bass coming off stage was usually so loud that I could rarely run the bass through the subs...in fact I rarely bothered with subs for this reason unless the gigs were outdoors.

It was not unusual for me to run a HPF on the bass up over 200 hz and just dial in a little bit of mids to get a little clarity.

If I pushed the SPL to a level where I could run the bass in the subs, the audience would run for the door...and/or write nasty letters to my bosses boss.

In some instances I have run the HPF on the bass channel strip of the mixer as high as 400 hz. I believe I may have said earlier in the thread, in my experience 80 to 400 hz is often more problematic than <80hz.

As a player, I like a speaker that can cover the low frequency range effortlessly but I don't want it to be hyped. My normal tone involves very open mids and extended highs...smooth rather than clanky. I am more comfortable with reduced low frequency output than limiting the highs. Also I normally run my speakers near ear level at a very low volume...it's common for people to ask me to turn up.

More accurately, SOME bass amps are catching up to others. I've been using HPF's for at least 20 years...

Both the SVT and 810E limit extreme lows. Lot's people think that rig is the holy grail.

I don't have scans of the 810 but a frequency plot of the SVT preamp is in the post below. Note the low frequency roll off.
I knew these would come in handy again some day. These are measurements of my SVT that I did some time ago:

Channel one, ultra switches out, EQ flat. I think I set it up for 10W into the load but I can't remember exactly. It's pretty flat. As you increase power I think you'd see the low end begin to roll off a bit.

Channel one, Ultra low in the + position. This is quite mid-scooped and I think the "SVT" setting on the Tech 21 stuff is based on the ultra-lo being engaged.

So you can see from these that the SVT is not inherently mid-scooped when the ultra-lo is not engaged and very much mid-scooped when it is.

The SWR bass amps I've seen were cone flappin' monsters that kill drivers :nailbiting:.

I used one of the original Redheads and part of the problem was its speakers were ported extremely low. It sounded nice, but did not punch through a mix very well. Adding the SWR Big Ben to that rig helped a lot. Not a lot of sub bass from that 18', but it put out plenty of low mids.
