High pass filter?

Is there any products out there that is just a highpass filter? I am trying to get rid of the boominess of the room I am playing in.
You don't want a highpass filter. Contrary to popular belief boom is not sourced in the bass below 100Hz, it's sourced in the midbass from 100-300Hz. Removing boom is best accomplished with a parametric filter that allows attenuation of the boom with removing the low end.

Ah, so you don't remove everything below the offending frequency; as you would with a HP filter.

This is good to think about.
 
This might sound kinda stupid but, is thier any difference between a parametric EQ and the EQ on a preamp?

You can target a frequency for cut or boost with the parametric or semiparmetric. Like on a Thunderfunk or iAmp. More simple eq controls have a frequency center or may be shelving (center changes with boost or cut). I would love to have a TFunk with the semiparametric section to better tailor sound. Right now though, I'm going to add a Raven Labs PHA-1 to my Focus - along with my onboard preamps - to see what I get. Trying to stay light.

A parmetric allows you to set the depth and width of the notch and sweep to find the the frequency of the notch so that you take out the boom without affecting anything else. Shelving and graphic EQs don't allow that.

True, true. Also a bummer for those who don't seem to use/understand EQ or frequencies anyway. Simpler is often better in that case, and hope the boom is failry wide and general anyway.

...Having a system that doesn't show much harmonic distortion in the bass range, one rarely finds boominess a problem. I think that's a great approach, much nicer than fiddling with EQ.
 
You don't need a parametric or semi parametric (which is essentially the same as a graphic presentation anyway). You just need EQ facilities that allows at least one of its knobs or sliders to access somewhere in that range (100-300).

Do you get to try any of the 'hot of the press' stuff up there in the cabin? I'd love to hear (read) your take on some of this stuff.

From my limited experience with the IP310, it seems that the issue is the extreme low end of the tone spectrum, not the upper bass or lower mids. There is almost a sort of sub sonic thing going on. It's almost similar to the Acme thing, where lots of users kick in the 50zh hi pass to reduce the extreme low end extension.

I assume that's why Jim B. is developing a hi pass filter to pair with that cab. To my ear, the ability to roll off some deep low end would be useful for that cab.

Having gigged extensively with a cab thats extended in low frequency response (and makes less harmonic distortion that often clouds the mid/upper bass when levels climb), almost the only time I've encounted caveats with having onstage SPL at the true low bass frequencies is

(1) when I'm playing with good PA subwoofer support having true lows on stage can cause cancellation and reinforcement troughs and peaks in conjunction with the PA subs. In such cases I don't run much lows on stage, and then they aren't needed ANYWAY.

(2) on especially crappy smaller stages a lot of bass can work its way through kick and tom mic stands and that is another sonic smudge that isn't needed either. If there is little or no PA subs support in this case, getting rid of some lows can also gut the sense of a real bass guitar function being fulfilled. I often have some closed cell foam to place under mic stands should I encounter such a crap venue.

I'm usually a generation behind on at least some of the boutiquey stuff, unless it is released about the same time I make one of my pilgrimages to Bass Northwest or am traveling through some urban area where there are some decent music stores. Occasionally some band plays in a club around here and the bass player has something I haven't heard yet (during breaks coralling the bassist and getting if not a little listen up close, a good chat about the gear)... or some daring local actually gets a new system that nobody else around here even has a clue exists.

Without knowing the frequency response of the system, and the EQ capability of the pre being used with it, difficult to say. But by and large most cabs tend to have response bumps in the 100-300 Hz area, and few EQs have the capability to tame response there without also robbing it below 100Hz. Even 1/3 octave EQs affect response as much as a full octave above and below the center frequency. There are rooms that are difficult below 100 Hz of course, but not near as many as those resonant above that.

+1 IMO and IME, this is a little bit different, since the internal DSP is used to get the cab relatively flat. So, in what I experienced with a limited 'in the basement' trial of the IP310, combined with many posts of people trying to reduce the low end in some situations, and also my rather extensive on the gig experience with the only other cab that is 'reasonably' flat on the scope... the Acme cabs, it seems that the IP's have pretty even response from high to low, but similar to the Acme, the low end doesn't roll off at the typical 50hz or higher of other cabs. This, to my ear, results in quite a bit of almost 'subwoofer' like rumble that can get in the way of some people's preferred tone in some rooms and situations.

Again... over my head hear on the technical stuff... but the IP does not seem to have the issue you are describing... rather the need to trim the deep low end in some situations... hence Jim's Hi Pass filter recommendation.

As always... I could be WAY wrong here!

is to put some dense foam under your cab(s). I use that coarse pac**** foam that comes with some rackmount/electronics equipment; I've cut it and glued it with a hot glue gun into the size that works with my cabs. Worth a try, very unscientific, but cheap.
