High School bassist looking into the great beyond...

I'm zcarnes and I'm a high school junior thinking about auditions in the coming year. I lean towards classical arco playing, and besides my school orchestra, I've been playing in a local orchestra as well as the principal position in a youth orchestra program offered by a nearby university.

A large part of my life is the music I make, listen to, and enjoy, and I'm currently in the process of deciding whether a degree in music is right for me. It's a tough decision, but all the threads on this forum provide a great deal of insight into the matter.

I've been lurking on the forum for a little while and really dig the community here, really excited to be a part of it!

Just make sure your degree includes something beyond performing arts. Few can feed the family by only preforming.

I was in your position in high school, although my "professional" interest was primarily tuba. I toyed with majoring in music, but ultimately I realized that, at least where I lived, there was no career as a music major other than going on to become a music teacher. As noble a career path as that was, it certainly wasn't for me. My advice would be to explore as many different fields as possible during your freshman and sophomore years of college. You may find out, like I did (after changing majors literally 11 times) that science or some other field is just as fascinating, and more capable of supporting you financially, as music.
